Mark Hanover Obituary

Ledyard - Mark R. Hanover, 79, of Ledyard, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital on Aug. 5, 2017.

He was born on Jan. 5, 1938, to Carl and Eloise Hanover in New London. He graduated from Robert E. Fitch High School in 1955 and from the University of Connecticut in 1959. He was married on June 11, 1960, to Carolyn (Allyn) Hanover at the Groton Congregational Church.

He served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant from 1960 to 1962 where he was stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. Upon returning to Groton he was employed as a technical writer at Electric Boat, later assuming a similar position at the Naval Underwater Systems Center. Upon retirement he started his own business, PM Publishing.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three children, Greg Hanover (Carol) of Deep River, Wendy Pinckney (Randall) of Waxhaw, N.C. and Kerry Bowman (Greg) of North Potomac, Md.; and eight grandchildren, Patrick and Allyson Hanover, Ethan, Seth and Owen Pinckney, and Benjamin, Nathan and Katie Bowman. He was predeceased by a brother, Carl Jr., as well as his parents.

Mark was a skilled woodworker and enjoyed building beautiful furniture for his family. In his retirement he loved traveling to Vermont and being outside doing landscaping. He was also famous for his clam chowder that he enjoyed making for family and friends.

The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff on Floor 6.2 at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital for their compassionate care during Mark's illness.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark's memory to the Ledyard Regional Visiting Nurse Association, 741 Colonel Ledyard Highway, Ledyard, CT 06339 or the Ledyard Volunteer Emergency Squad, 11 Fairway Drive, Ledyard, CT 06339.

C.A., Greg, Wendy and Kerry,

What a shock to learn of Mark's passing, a great friend who I always thought of as the picture of good health.
Mark was my first local friend when I began work in the technical publications department at Electric Boat in the fall of 1963. His warm smile and firm handshake immediately made me feel welcome. He not only showed me the ropes at Tech Pubs, but we soon learned of our common interest in cars how I envied his beautiful Alfa-Romeo sports car! And C.A., all those great home-cooked meals at the house in Mystic; just the thing for a bachelor who couldn't boil water on his own! And who could forget the day at the beach down at Esker Point? You guys made water skiing look easy, yet I couldn't get up on skis to save my soul. Nothing like being towed through the water on my stomach at 20 mph on a hot summer day -- all great fun!
In later years, when my wife was taking her first tentative steps toward desktop publishing, we turned to an established pro for advice; who else but Mark? He spent a couple of hours showing Roberta the ropes, teaching her techniques we both still employ to this day thanks Mark!
Warmest thoughts to you guys at this difficult time, and God's speed to a great guy and a special friend!

CA,our deepest sympathies for you and the Hanover family. We will always remember the great clam chowder he made for us in Cape Cod. He even made a special trip to Wellfleet to get the clams that were dug that morning. He had a dry wit and an infectious laugh It was fun to work together to do the plumbing in the new house. May he rest in peace dreaming of a quiet stream in the Vermont woods.

Dear Carolyn and Family, It seems like yesterday when I went to the Hanover home in Groton with my friend Carl and met Mark and their parents. Who would have known back then (1961) our paths would cross so many years and so many times in the future? Caroline and I are so sorry for your loss and our hearts go out to everyone who misses Mark/Dad/Grandpa and more.

Dear C.A. & Family,

I am deeply saddened by the news of Mark's passing. He was like a father to me growing up. I have the fondest memories of him and he will sincerely be missed. One of the most vivid memories I have from my childhood, is of he and I taking rides on his BMW motorcycle. I will cherish those days forever and always hold a special place in my heart for him. Please, stay strong in your time of grief and reflect on the wonderful husband, father and friend that he was.

Sincerely, Dan Breen
