Mary Stober Obituary

Glen Allen, Va. - Mary Elizabeth Stober (Orkney), 79, of Glen Allen, Va., passed away peacefully Dec. 24, 2025. Mary was the beloved wife of Stan Stober for 52 years. They met at Shennecossett Beach in Groton, as teenagers, where she purposefully tripped Stan down the stairs in order to set him up with her friend. Instead, he asked Mary to go sailing-the rest was history.

Mary and Stan were blessed with a large and loving family. Mary was preceded in death by Stan, who passed away in 2018. She is survived by her children, Matthew (Michelle), Andrew (Marnie), and Gretchen (Dennis) Moen; her grandchildren, David Foster, Alex Beilinson, Nicole Stober, Matthew Stober Jr., Callie Stober, Luke Stober, Bridget Stober, and Collin Moen; and her great-grandchildren, Gavin, Harper, and Levi Foster, as well as Grant, Marie, and Julie Beilinson. Alex named Mary "Hamma" when she started talking, and the entire family embraced the name from then on.

Born in Groton, Mary was the daughter of the late William and Margaret Orkney. She is survived by her dear sister and housemate, Nancy Hileman, and was preceded in death by her sisters, Peggy Nassetta and Barbara Dutton. After graduating from Fitch High School, Mary attended Simmons College in Boston.

Mary volunteered on the town finance committee, as well as at a women's shelter, the St. James North Carolina Chapel board, and the local food pantry. She was elected to the Ledyard Connecticut town council and even ran for mayor. She worked as a realtor and, outside of work, loved gathering with friends and family. Many nights were spent at the Gales Ferry house hanging out in the kitchen or by the pool-telling stories, drinking beverages, and making grilled cheese.

Mary's generosity seemed endless-from handing out cash to strangers at Christmas to welcoming friends to live in her home, she was always giving. In retirement, she made beautiful quilts for friends, family, and charities, and she was exceptionally quick-witted as a master bridge player.

Fittingly, Mary wanted a party instead of a funeral, so a celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date.

I only knew Mary during my high school years at Fitch in Groton. She was a year ahead of me but I remember her so well. She was always so sweet and caring and that meant so much to me since I was an underclassman. I'm honestly not sure if I saw her again after high school, we may have run into each other shopping or something, but seeing her face, her smile in her obituary, it seems like yesterday that we were in school and she once again brought a smile to my face. I'm sending my sincere condolences to her family and hoping that time helps to heal the pain of your loss of such a wonderful person.

Becky and I were saddened to hear of Mary´s passing. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Mary as an administrator in the LPS system for many years. Mary always did her best to work out compromises that were in the best interest of students and the community. She was an ardent supporter of our schools.

Condolences to the family.

Just wanting to extend our condolences to Matt and the whole family. Although I didn´t spend a lot of time with Mary... I loved her spirit and sense of kindness. She always made our family feel welcome.

I spent my teenage years at Sheeny Beach with Mary and others. Fun, fun, fun is how we spent our years there. The transistor radio was our entertainment. The Stober family had the bathhouse next to my families boathouse. I have thought about Mary often. Peace be with you my friend.
