Mary Woodworth Obituary

Groton - Mary B. Woodworth, 88, of Fellowship Manor, 235 Lestertown Road F-2, Groton , and formerly a long time resident of Crocker Street, New London, died Wednesday morning at Fairview where she had been a patient for five years.

She was born July 22, 1917 in New London, the daughter of Lt. Col. William T. Babcock and Mary Schultz Babcock.

Mrs. Woodworth graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute, Class of 1934, where she was very active in all musical activities, and then attended Connecticut College for a short time. Mrs. Woodworth was well known as both a pianist and a piano teacher and taught many children the pleasure of music making. She had also worked as a bookkeeper at the former National Bank of Commerce in New London.

She was married to Richard N. Woodworth in New London on April 9, 1938.

Mrs. Woodworth a life long member of the First Baptist Church of New London, where she was member of the Circle 12 group, a Sunday School Teacher as well as many other groups and committees involved in the life of the church. She will be remembered for her willingness to always help the less fortunate

When the local Hospice organization was founded, she and her husband Richard were one of the first class of volunteer caregivers to be formed. For years afterward, it was well known to the Hospice group that if a difficult situation occurred, or someone needed immediate assistance they needed only to call Mary and Dick Woodworth. In addition to her many awards and honors, the Woodworths' were recognized as the 2000 Hospice Volunteers of the Year.

In addition to her husband Richard of 67 years, she is survived by three sons, Richard B. Woodworth, of Pawcatuck, William R. Woodworth, of Cherry Hill, N.J., and David E. Woodworth, of Farmington; a brother, William T. Babcock Jr., of Grafton, Vt.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary B. Grandchamp, and a sister, Ruth Stevens.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at The Pequot Chapel, 857 Montauk Ave., New London. Burial will be in Jordan Cemetery, Waterford. Following the burial, family and friends are invited to gather in the Thames Room of Fellowship Manor, Groton.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make a memorial donation may contribute to Hospice of S.E. CT, PO Box 902, Uncasville, CT 06382 or to Fairview, Building Fund, 235 Lestertown Rd., Groton, CT 06340.
