Matthys Visser Obituary

Ledyard - Matthys Visser, 59, of Ledyard and Lincoln, N.H., died on Nov. 1, 2014.

He was born on July 11, 1955, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, the son of Simon Visser and Barbara Hall. Matty immigrated to the United States at age 10 with his family. He graduated from Ledyard High School in 1974, attending the Vocational Agricultural program.

He was a gifted landscape designer and certified horticulturalist, beginning his career at Holdridge Farm Nursery and eventually starting his own business, Estate Caretakers and Design. He volunteered in the Ledyard Fire Department for 20 years and liked to help others whenever he could. Outdoor activities such as skiing, hiking, volleyball, and tennis were his passions, and he loved a competitive challenge of any sort.

For the last 20 years, he divided his time between Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Florida, where he welcomed visits from friends and family. His kindness and generosity toward others was remarkable, and this has been expressed by a large circle of friends who deeply miss his company.

He is survived by his wife, Wendy Woods; daughter, Delaney Santa Maria; son, Justin Visser, daughter-in-law, Sarah, and grandchildren, Lauren, Madelyn, and Joshua. Also surviving are his mother, Barbara Hall; father, Simon Visser; and siblings, Simon Visser, Lydia Von Borstel, Pierce Hall, and Eugene Hall.

His family will greet relatives and friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. Following a private burial, a celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Port ‘N Starboard, Ocean Beach, 1225 Ocean Ave., New London.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Speare Memorial Hospital, Development Department, 16 Hospital Road, Plymouth, NH 03264, in memory of Matthys Visser.

Not sure what to say?

October 30, 2019

Matt, we think of you a lot when we go to Lincoln. I remember meeting you when we were at Woodstock Station and then doing a hike the next day at Lincoln Woods. I remember you saying that you were "double nickels," meaning you were 55. Cory and I have been playing a lot of tennis at Deer Park and Village of Loon. We miss playing against you and Wendy. We have gotten so good, we would kick your butt now !! I hope you can see us play. Miss you. Anne McGreal

Matty was the Hugh Hefner of Ledyard in that his door was always open to his friends; he loved having us over for parties; bridal showers; swimming…he was a listener and an adviser. A good man has passed on….

My condolences to Matty's family and friends. He was a thoughtful generous guy who I recall fondly from back in the 80's- always welcoming countless friends to his Ledyard home for long volleyball nights and other summer fun. Everyone liked him so very much, and he will be missed
