Nicholas LaCour Obituary

New Orleans, La. - Nicholas "Nick" Taylor LaCour Sr. passed away Aug. 19, 2024, at the age of 67. He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles M. LaCour and Nancy Powers LaCour; brothers, Toby Hindermann and Charles, Jonathan and Peter LaCour. He is survived by his son Nicholas Taylor LaCour Jr.; and sister Lorraine "Lorrie" Guiza. He was uncle to nieces and nephews, Terry, Tyler and Nancy Hindermann; Charles and Will LaCour; Emi-ly, Taylor, and Timothy Guiza; and Katie LaCour Schackai and Averill LaCour.

Nick was born Feb. 28, 1957, in New London, and graduated from Pomfret School and Tulane University. While at Tulane, Nick was a member of the DKE fraternity. Nick started in the New Orleans hospitality industry by working at Fat Harry's throughout college. He then went on to own and operate West End Café and Nick's on Carrollton.

"Good neighbor Nick" never met a mouth he didn't want to feed. He was an avid fan of Saints football and enjoyed many years of friendships forged through the local restaurant community.

A private family memorial will be held in the near future. In lieu of flowers, please enjoy a meal in his honor at your favorite neighborhood restaurant.

I just learned of Nick´s loss and am so sorry for all who loved him. Chris Flynn, you were prime suspect in all his New London stories, so I´ll follow your lead:

Abused Topsiders

Sister Lorrie´s "WFOS!" prom ride

"Dahk Hahbah" (pipe/Borkum Riff)

Todd Rundgren´s Something/Anything album

Florida oranges in the dead of winter

Tuck shop

Our pizza business

Desperate half mile sprint streaking Annhurst Women´s college (Spring ´74, look it up)

How we met in study hall

Slim Jims in Miss Reynolds´ math class

Mrs. Goodwin and her Weimaraner

Stacking dining hall tables 4 high

Keeping us warm in the penalty box

Gorgeous girl 1; Gorgeous girl 2 (?!? Go figure)

Best chicken sandwich I ever had

Charlie Cole and Mr. LaCour

"Benheimer"

"Pete and re-Pete"

Old Orchard Park

Did he ever get that AMC Gremlin?

Way too many hilarious/stupid fun times to count

Nick called me every year on my birthday from 1973 on. Every. Year. We can only wish for such loyalty in our friends. Miss you huge, my big jerk buddy. Your loss hits hard.

Nick and I both graduated from Pomfret School and Tulane. On my trip to visit Tulane as a high school senior, Nick took care of me and showed my the value of a Tulane education and appreciation for New Orleans. It´s because of Nick I went to I chose Tulane and the rest was history. I met my wife there and Tulane prepared me for a successful career and great family life since.
Thank you Nick for guiding a young 18 year old in the right direction.
God bless and RIP

I knew that Nick had been in ill health for several years, but his death caught me by surprise. My heartfelt Condolences to you Nick, Lorrie, family and friends. Such good memories of Nick. He hired my daughter, Donna, at West End Cafe after she moved back to New Orleans. He refused to let Dickie or Zeke remove the record LOLA from the jukebox. My husband Don and I ate there several times a week and when we walked in, the record was playing with Zeke singing loudly along..
L-O-L-A, LOLA!!!
Don always said that Nick's great gumbo was second only to my mother's. Roll Wave, Nick!! Rest in peace.

Nick and All LaCours,

Always sad to learn of the passing of a childhood friend, remembering the 60s and 70s and all the fun times we had between Hillside, Guthrie, Pequot, Rayburn/Reyquinn (cowshed, Charlie?), Lower Blvd and beyond. Trip to Abbot's in Noank in the Boston Whaler, with Evinrude 33, out to West Harbor Fisher's Island, I think we could outrun USCG 40 footers with twin 250 diesels, not that we had to? Shooting into Smith Cove, Quaker Hill, best water skiing, "glass", and blue crabbing spot, with inches to spare flying under the train trestle. Sails on dad's Bayou Belle. We were 14!

Playing tennis out back between periods of 1970 B's Stanley Cup run vs StL Blues on WSBK 38, a sweep, with Orr's "flying" OT winning goal in game 4.

Afterschool "snacks" at Jack's (you want beans with that?) Place, a roast beef grinder and fries, Joe Caufield's clear broth clam chowder on Fridays, with whole clams and chunks of potatoes, bacon, none of the diced bits you "see" today, then we'd go home to dinner!

Cigarette, Nancy's Larks, and first of the BIC lighters, holder taped to the crossbar on blue Schwinn 10 speed, cruising Indian Path (someone said an arrowhead was found there, a sharp rock maybe?) on a Rupp or a Chibi minibike. Learning to drive a 63? Chevy Nova with four speed on the column, before we had a license. Or was it Neil's mother's black Lark Studebaker? I'm pretty sure it wasn't Jack's MB "The SH" as he used to call it, or diesel fume belcher or even Dick's? baby blue VW Bug. Who had the AMC Javelin? Think Nova was Jonathan's car before he got a Volvo Wagon and Sarah? Could have been Charles'?

Nick's 10 Triple E Sperry Topsiders, those were some wide feet! Desmond in the pantry cooking up something. First video game 1972 Odyssey on Magnavox TV. Black (Susie?) and Yellow (Betsy?) Labs, we got a pup from Betsy, Elouise, Abbigail the Bassett Hound and must not forget Dorcus, Nancy's Siamese? That cat was LOUD!

After Nick went to Pomfret and then on to Tulane, our friendship was diminished by distance a bit, but we were in periodic contact via text and an occasional phone call, from 2012 with pictures of destroyed Osprey Beach Pavillion from Sandy and recent wind farm pics in August 2024, but mainly through contact with Lorrie and Ellen.

I saw Nick in 2007, two years after Katrina, when I took my son Patrick to check out Tulane. NO was still a mess; I think the hospital was still closed? Michael took us around to NO's hot spots, Nick had come in from Slidell, taking us to some Po'boy stand, (you want gravy on that?) best shrimp BBQ, Pascal's Manale, yes, you need a bib, going in the exit side at Cafe du Monde to avoid lines out front, crawfish boils along the Audubon Park berm, all with numerous hurricane related tails. Mike assured us that "every drop of rain in NO gets pumped out."

The last time I saw Nick, I was returning from Houston with my son Lawrence on May 19, 2017. I remember the date because the Robert E Lee statue had been removed that night as we came into NO. I was sure to take Lawrence to Pascals, he loved shrimp! We took a similar trip down this Memory Lane; he seemed in good spirits.

I could go on and on, as each memory brings on another, but truly, I feel I have lost a family member, another brother. Our families have faced many ups and downs together over the last six decades, reminding me of how fortunate we are since moving onto Guthrie in 1965. I am grateful and pray that it will continue. Peace to you Lorrie, call or text any time and get back to CT soon?

Nick, I hope there's a decent jambalaya and plenty of tabasco at the "gates."

Nick, you were a great friend to me and my family. We always looked forward to seeing you on Fridays at Nick's on Carrollton. My daughters still talk about how much they enjoyed your cooking lessons and hanging out in the kitchen with Monkey (Richard) and Kendall. Your the last of a great New Orleans legacy. I hope and pray that you, Dickie, Carl, and Joey open a Fat Harry's in Heaven... keep a barstool open for me. My prayers and condolences to little Nick and the family.
