Paul Sturges Obituary

East Lyme - Paul Weston Sturges, G'Michmikigwon, "He who strengthens thee," cherished husband, devoted father and esteemed grandfather passed away May 25, 2024, at the age of 71. Born Sept. 9, 1952, to Chief Ralph Sturges and Georgiana Ida Page Sturges in New London.

He lived in New London, until designing and building his dream home for his family in East Lyme, in 1987. Paul's journey was one of love, dedication and service to his family, community and the Mohegan tribe. His legacy leaves behind an everlasting impression on many people. He is survived by his beloved wife JoAnne Sturges; his children, Paula Sturges Smith (Kyle) and Jesse Sturges (Alisha); and his four adoring grandchildren: Tyler, Joseph Paul, Valarie and Naomie Sturges. Paul was deeply involved with the Mohegan Tribe and served on the Tribal Council during federal recognition, organizing wigwam festivals, and was chairman of the board of education. Paul took immense pride in his work particularly during his tenure at Electric Boat and as senior director of regulation and compliance for the Mohegan Tribe.

Paul's commitment to community extended to his passion for baseball where he supported local leagues from fundraising to coaching nurturing the love of the game in countless young athletes. Additionally, he served on the board for the Connecticut Cancer Foundation. Paul's legacy is one of service, leadership and compassion. He will be deeply missed as the countless lives he touched throughout his remarkable life. In this time of mourning, let us remember Paul's spirit and the profound impact he made on his community and beyond.

Calling hours/visitation for Paul will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 8, at Montville Funeral Home of Church & Allen, 53 Norwich-New London Turnpike, Uncasville. Following the calling hours/visitation will be a graveside funeral service at 12:30 p.m. at Fort Shantok Burial Grounds, 340 Massapeag Side Road, Uncasville. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Paul's memory to the Connecticut Cancer Foundation, 15 North Main Street, Old Saybrook, CT 06475, (860)388-0788, CTCancerFoundation.org.
