Peg Moran Obituary

Stonington - Peg Moran, 74, of Pawcatuck, affectionately known to many as "the flower woman" and an inaugural member of the Stonington Farmers Market, passed away Thursday, Dec. 25, 2014.

A flower vendor for the past 20+ years, she was instrumental in supplying the market with a wide range of flowers that she grew on the land she cultivated in Pawcatuck. In addition to being an artisan farmer, Peg authored several books on topics including women in small business to local agriculture. Her most recent book: An Acre Plus: Invitation to a Growing Life was published in 2010.

She was a well known champion of local causes and as a member of CLUC (Chicken Lovers Urge Change), she recently assisted in changing planning and zoning regulations to permit backyard chicken farming in Stonington.

Sharing her passion with others, Peg will be remembered as an entrepreneur, author and an accomplished farmer. She will be sorely missed by her loving family and deep network of friends in the local community.

Peg is survived by her son, John Ziegler of Chappaqua, N.Y.; and her two granddaughters, Jordan Ziegler (13) and Morgan Ziegler (11) - who she adored.

The family will be hosting a memorial gathering from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, at the Stonington Harbor Yacht Club.

Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to: The Community Foundation of Southeastern Connecticut - The Women and Girls Fund.

Dear family of Peg,
I was lucky enough to know Peg for many years as a member of the Mystic and Noank Library writing group. She was a skilled and diligent writer who often took time to look up in a dictionary the particular word we were writing about that day. She wanted us to know all the nuances of the word. She was warm and friendly and created many beautiful flower arrangements that graced the library front desk. I was excited about her latest project with Christmas bulbs and will always think of her when I see one of these. Know that Peg lives on in our memories of her. Peace, Sue Peowski

My heart goes out to John and Peg's granddaughters and to Tom Moran and Peg's nieces. Peg shared her considerable knowledge and skills with others. She provided encouragement to the many women with whom she worked as well as the residents of her community. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm, her diligence, and
her commitment to sustainability.

I worked for Peg for two seasons in High School. She was a wonderful woman and I could not have asked for a better person to work for in my first job. She was charismatic and a friend. I always looked forward to spending mornings with her in the gardens and our conversations on biological plant structures. She had much passion for her flowers and chickens! Time with her flew by, and she made it fun to work in the dirt. It was always magical to see her final products that were delivered to weddings after months of production. I will miss her spunk and it is hard to imagine anyone with a greener thumb and a love for flowers like she had. My thoughts are with you.

My son worked for Peg a few years ago helping her prepare her beds for the glorious blossoms she cultivated. Peg was patient with Jon, teaching him about the flowers he was helping her tend. Often when I would pick Jon up from work Peg would greet me with a bouquet, quipping that the chauffeur must be paid too. We were fortunate to have the flower lady in our midst; she will be missed at the farmers' markets, the library and all of the places she shared her passions. Gail Turgeon
