To the entire Schilke family,
I am so sorry for your loss. I just read about this online. I was stationed with Pete in Iceland Defense Force 101 reserve unit in the 90's. Pete was an outstanding Officer and boss. I will always remember his upbeat personality and devotion to his family and the Naval Service. Rest easy shipmate.

Laurie, Thomas, Erik, Jonathan , Sarah...Don, Paul and Carole..and all of your extended family. Michael and I were so, so deeply sad to hear the news of Pete. He was my backyard neighbor since we were in First Grade. He was my good friend..then and in the present. The Forest Avenue ...and Kenilworth Avenue kids growing up was so joyful! We were all good friends from Holmes School...and beyond. Peter was larger than life! So kind and giving to all! He was always so positive and could help you, even if you thought ...the situation was impossible!! His biggest pride and joy was his family and his 2 dogs! Laurie, Michael and I are praying for all of you. "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted"..Love and peaceful comfort to all of you. We know the Lord is helping you and keeping all of you in his arms! Pete is there with him!

To The Entire Schilke Family,
So sorry to hear of your loss.Peter was a classmate at O.P.R.F. I remember him as a bright, witty, warm, and fun loving guy. He was also humble, yet he instilled so much confidence in those around him.I am sure this trait was recognized at Annapolis and beyond.
One of the last times I remember seeing Pete was at a friends wedding in Oak Park (at the Nineteeth Century club ).Pete and his mom were both in attendance.
Although its been so many years since Ive seen him I will still miss him and remember him so very fondly
Sincerely,

Laura, I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Pete was my first - and BEST - Division Officer on the Nat Greene. He was a very special officer and gentleman, a true leader.
Every time I see a small island with a house on it I am taken back 30+ years to the party you all hosted for E-Div on Potato Island.
Please know that you and your family are in our prayers and rest assured that Pete is having a blast in Heaven.

I worked with Pete on many projects during my years at Electric Boat. He was always a source of knowledge, enthusiasm and humor. His easy going manner and desire to ensure the group's success made him a pleasure to work with. Donna and I were saddened to hear about Pete's untimely passing and send our deepest sympathies to his family.

I would like to pass on my families prayers, as well as The Carolina Piedmont Base, United States Submarine Veteran's, who were crew mates on the SSBN Nathaniel Greene. I was going through Advanced Radioman Submarine School in Groton at the same time then Lt. Schilke was attending officer's school there. I regret that I never got the chance to make his acquaintance at the time. I was eventually assigned to the USS Albuquerque, SSN-706 where I was qualified submarines. The branch of the Schilke's that I come from was from the Schilke's of Middletown, Connecticut (1950's through Present). My uncles at the time always told me that if my last name matched any other Schilke's that we were related somehow. Once again, Our prayers for your family. Hand Salute Sir, We have the watch.

Laurie and family, Judi & I send our deepest condolences. Peter was my best friend in high school. He will always live on in our memories. Running with him, the radio blasting by the pool at his parents house, the few times we sailed on the Chesapeake, weekends at your fist home, his goofy laugh.

Laurie and family:
No doubt in my mind that Pete is in heaven sailing, and though many years will pass till you see him again, they will be but the blink of an eye in 10,000 years. This is our Father's plan for all of us. I am so sorry that he called Pete home at such a young age.
Your husband and dad was part of an elite culture. Pete valued things that we all should hold dear: faith, family, honesty and service. He was easily the best man I've ever known and remains a beacon that I hold myself upto. This isn't hyperbole or exaggeration. Pete was awesome.
Sandra and I have very warm memories of our Tango Bravo "party" at Watch Hill. He was my confident, friend and boss. ...and although I haven't seen Pete since 2007, somehow I sense that the world is smaller without him here. You are all in our prayers.

I have such a heavy heart hearing this sad news. I too was a classmate of Peter's at Holmes Elementary School in Oak Park and have such fond and warm memories of Pete. He was such a positive influence on those around him and never a negative thing to say about anyone. He is/was the best of 'em! God bless you, Pete and guide your family through this difficult time.

To Peters Family and Friends,
Pete and I worked together at E.B, and he was - one in a million.
He was respected and well-liked by all his co-workers.
A fellow animal lover, Pete and I always had a - great story to tell about our beloved tail wagging friends.
I have a picture Pete gave me, of his son on his motorcycle, with dog Jack in the basket enjoying the ride.
I love you Pete, and you will always be in my memory, till we meet again in Heaven.

Pete and I went to grade school together (Holmes) and he was a good friend. I later was able to reconnect with him at our Holmes school reunion in 1999 but have not seen him since. He was a great man and was a great friend back in the days when we both were young. Very sad to hear of his passing but will pray for his family.

What I will miss most about Pete...his outrageous sense of humor, his smile, and the love that he showed for his wife and family at all times. My heart aches for this family, but I know that each of his family members knew that they were loved by Pete. I would imagine that he is smiling down on them, while creating laughter in heaven. God Bless...Elen , Steve and Troy

Dear Laurie, Sarah, Peter, Erik, Jonathon, and the entire circle of Pete's family and friends,
I'm a friend of Pete's from work. We, first of all, shared dolphins; we also shared faith...Pete has been part of a prayer circle I moderate for a number of years. We regularly passed one another in the halls where we talked of family and dogs, and, of course, sea stories! While he was intensely intelligent, he was, too, disarmingly funny, and he was crazy proud about his family. He also tried to talk me into sailing and now I truly regret the some day!
Having lost both parents myself, know, all too well, this very special loss! Understanding the hole left behind, regardless the inevitability or forewarning, pray this helps some wee bit...to allow...enable...the grief! And this grief will come...and linger; indulge it because it is necessary...it is how God built us...and it reflects the measure of whom you've lost...and I know that's much!
So truly sorry to hear about your husband, dad, friend. At least now he's at peace with our Lord...definitely keepin' y'all in my prayers!
When my mother died, even after a years-long battle with cancer, I was shattered by the loss...inconsolable...she was my mentor! I like to think that I got my character from my father, but my mind and its capacity from m'dear sainted mother!!! BUT, "If your faith assures you she's in heaven, then what are the tears all about?!?" I hold eternity dearly close...a cherished, hard-won prize...but, in the interim, that answer lies below.
SELFISH TEARS
(I Eulogize My Beloved Mother - March, 1989)
Today we cry...must admit they're selfish tears.
You see...our faith assures your journey's done.
But it's not for you we mourn, at all, my dear;
It's for those of us you've left behind...alone!!!
We share your joy...share your happiness at rest,
Your painful fears now for forever stilled.
You've fought the good fight, passed the final test,
But you've left behind a hole that can't be filled!!!
So, until we each rejoin you some someday,
And, while your memory buoys us through those years,
We'll miss you...but continue on our way,
And, from time to time, we'll cry our selfish tears!!!
