Richard Rolfe Obituary

East Lyme - Richard L. "Dick" Rolfe Sr., 66, of Niantic, entered eternal life on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2010.

He was born Feb. 27, 1944, in New London, the son of Helen E. (Holmes) Rolfe of Waterford and the late Ralph L. Rolfe. Dick grew up in Waterford and was a graduate of Waterford High School class of 1962. In his youth, he played Little League the first year Waterford South started with his father coaching. He later coached his son and daughter in the early 80s.

He was united in marriage to the former Wanda Bieszad on Aug. 25, 1990, in Flanders Community Baptist Church. Mrs. Rolfe survives him. He was employed at Electric Boat for 30 years as rigger foreman retiring in 1990. Dick was later employed for Turbo Products and the Shoe Shop in New London where he was a master cobbler. He enjoyed golfing with family and friends, was a member of the Southeastern New England Senior Golf Association, and always looked forward to caddying for his brother, Randy, at golf tournaments. He was a member of the Flanders Men's Bowling League at Waterford Family Bowl where he was well known, and he also spent time at the Thames Club in New London. He played softball in the Waterford Men's League. He enjoyed NASCAR, going to Waterford Speed Bowl, and tinkering with old cars. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and New England Patriot's fan. One of Dick's attributes was his mechanical mind and fixing things he came across. He was an avid fisherman in his youth, fishing from a dingy or charter boat. He enjoyed gardening with flowers, vegetables, or maintaining his lawn. He will always be remembered for taking the time to show interest in all of his family's hobbies and being there for us all when we needed him.

Besides his wife of 20 years, he is survived by four children and their families, Eilleen and Karl Weinsteiger of Lebanon and children, Heather, Charles, and Andrew; Richard and Sara Rolfe Jr. of Niantic and children, Kayla and Richard Logan; Heidi and Lee Brown of Pipe Creek, Texas and children, Scarlett, Skyler, and Morgan; Joy and Kelly Kretzer of Pipe Creek and children Macey, KJ, and Katie. Three siblings and spouses, Randall L. and Denise Rolfe of Pa., Judith and Wayne Martin of New London, and Candice and George Grimes of East Lyme.

He was predeceased by a brother, Ronald L. Rolfe.

His family will receive relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday in Flanders Baptist Community Church, Boston Post Road, East Lyme. Interment is private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Caddy Scholarship Reunion Fund C/O Tom Edwards, 30 Meadow Drive, Gales Ferry, CT 06335.

Hey Dicky, just learned a new saying from Iakota Indians, "doapsha," which means instead of saying 'bye my friend' we'll see you again whether in this lifetime or next... lots of good memories: working on clunkers or sharing a joke with a cold one. You left a wee bit early, let the rest of us learn from that. My hat is off to you & my condolences to your children, family and friends who are already missing you.

The loss of a parent is hard to bear,
We as children expect them to always be there.
Someone to turn to and guide us through,
Lifes little moments and all we do.
It is then we remember and all that they taught us,
It comes from deep inside that they are within us.
You can't hug and hold them, or see their face.
Your love and memories will always take place.
You try to be stong as you say goodbye,
It's part of their lessons, we must at least try.
But remember they taught us to love,to laugh and gave us strength to go on,
And you know that parents are never wrong.
With much love, Aunt Brenda
