Sallie Elizabeth Unruh

Waterford - Sallie Elizabeth Unruh , 77, formerly of Waterford, died peacefully and comfortably Monday, July 28, 2025, in her bed. She is survived by her children, Linda Cassidy of Chicago, Ill., and Jamie Unruh and his wife Annie of Fairfield; her brother Thomas Unruh and his wife Evelyn of Rincon, Ga.; her brother Michael Unruh and his wife Nora Cambier of Cary, N.C.; and her most beloved grandchildren, Cullen and Jane.

Sallie was born Sept. 1, 1947, to Allen and Jean Unruh in Peoria, Ill., where she was raised with her two brothers, Tom and Mike.

She graduated from high school at the Academy of Our Lady in Peoria, then briefly attended Southern Illinois University. But college wasn't for her. Her true calling, was to be a glamorous airline stewardess for United Airlines. She traveled the world, many times over, bringing friends and family along for the ride. After aging out of that due to the 1960s-70s hysterically strict guidelines, she moved to Connecticut to start a new life.

She made great friends and formed many lifelong relationships. She worked at the Steak Loft, she spent time at Studio 54, and eventually started her own sign-making business. Her artistic ability and creativity knew no bounds. She was hard working and capable, leading to nearly a 40-year career of owning her shop, Signworks.

After hanging up the paintbrush, she moved to Fairfield County, to be close to her growing family. Her kids, she tolerated, but her grandkids were her happy place. She truly lived for them.

She battled many mental and physical health issues, but she stayed strong until the end. She lived a life that mattered. And left behind a legacy that will be felt for many years to come.

In memory of Sallie, please find time to give yourself a break. Take a minute to breathe. Remind yourself of all that you have, and not what you don't. Life's a journey. Enjoy the ride. A Celebration of Life will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the Steak Loft in Mystic. Come join us for a snack and a drink to remember a life well lived.
