Stella Duval Obituary

New London - Stella Rose (Brokowski) Duval, 90, formerly of 13 Amity St., New London, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2009, at Fountainview Care Center in Waterford, after a brief illness.

Stella was born on Jan. 18, 1919, in Taftville, to the late Konstanty and Rozalia (Mokrzewska) Brokowski. Stella grew up on High Street in Norwich.

She later married Omer "Pete" Duval on Jan. 18, 1941, at St. Joseph Church in Norwich. After they married, Stella and Pete lived in the apartment above her mother's house.

Stella worked at Pratt and Whitney during war time from 1941 to1945. She then stopped working when she gave birth to her son, John, in November of 1945. In 1948, they moved to Norwood Avenue in New London when they purchased and ran the former Mother's Diner. In 1955, they moved to Killeen Road in Uncasville where Stella lived until her husband's death in 1993. While living in Uncasville, Stella went to work at Majestic Pants Factory in Norwich in 1956. In 1972, she went to work at General Dynamics/Electric Boat in Groton as a third shift graphic arts blue print operator and was a member of the MDA Union. While at GD/EB, Stella later transferred to second shift, becoming a union steward for a number of years until her retirement on Jan. 30, 1981, at the age of 62.

After her retirement, Stella and Pete enjoyed many vacations in the States and abroad. She especially loved going on cruises and playing card games. In Stella's later years she most enjoyed spending time at her son's establishment, Frank's Place, where many thought of her as a second mother. Stella was a communicant of St. Joseph Church in New London at the time of her death.

Besides her parents, Stella was also preceded in death by her husband, Omer "Pete" Duval on April 2, 1993; brothers, Chester Brokowski and Joseph Brokowski; and a sister, Sophie (Brokowski) Mrowka.

She is survived by her son, John J. Duval of New London; her sister, Steffi (Brokowski) Dziedzic of Long Island, N.Y.; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Calling hours will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the Impellitteri-Malia Funeral Home, 84 Montauk Ave., New London. A procession will depart from the funeral home at 11:15 a.m. on Monday, May 4, 2009, for an 11:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Joseph Church, Squire St., New London, celebrated by Reverend Joseph Castaldi, Pastor.
