Terry Rutledge Obituary

Mystic - Terry Ann Rutledge, 88, of Mystic, finally stopped being annoyed Dec. 1, 2024.

Ms. Rutledge was born Aug. 16, 1936, in Westerly, R.I., daughter of John A. Rutledge and Ella W. (Astil) Rutledge Atherton.

A graduate of Stonington High School with the Class of 1953, she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Advertising Design from the Rhode Island School of Design.

After working in graphic art in Boston, Providence, and New York, she returned to her hometown area. She enjoyed working with the Mystic Masquers, Theatre Workshop of Westerly, and the Stonington Players and received an O'Nie Award from the Community Theater Council and the Eugene O'Neill Theater for graphic design for "A Shot in the Dark". While doing publicity for Theatre Workshop, she was offered a job as Stonington reporter for the Westerly Sun and later held that position with The Compass of Mystic.

As her free-lance graphic art business increased, she was self-employed for 25 years doing business as PT Graphics. She retired in 2007. A voracious reader, she became a volunteer at the Mystic and Noank Library and a member of the Friends of the Library. She enjoyed years of being a "cellar dweller" sorting donations.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her aunt and godmother, Bessie (Astill) Lawton; her uncle and godfather, Kenneth N. Astill; her cousin, Rob Astill; her half-brother, John A. Rutledge Jr. and more cats than most people think are necessary. Terry is survived by her cousin John Astill of Westborough, Mass. and his children Lin, David and Ben.

In her memory, adopt a pet and love it, plant something and watch it grow, hug your family and friends more often than they want you to, help someone who needs it, buy a book and donate it to the library – but read it first, and once in a while, go look at the ocean – just to make sure it's still there.

There will be no services.

Terry was an artist, an avid reader, a good friend to many including the Mystic Noank Library, an animal lover(especially cats), always had "queries" about what was going on in the neighborhood, and she rarely let a good deed go unpunished. Her sense of humor kept her lovable. She is missed.

She was the Terry Outback to my Terri Upfront. We annoyed each other quite a bit, but I also have many fun memories of her and her cats. Her passing has left a very noticeable gap in the neighborhood. She might be happy to know I had no idea how old she was!

Dear Teru, I miss you especially at Christmas when your huge cardboard box of crazy, silly, fun and occasionally delicious and beautifully wrapped gifts would arrive on my doorstep. Instead, this year arrived a truly perfect (and beautifully wrapped) biography of our mutual RISD friend "Fud" Benson, which I will treasure as I do all my memories of her. Faith Childs

When I worked with Terry at The Westerly Sun, I was fairly certain that I annoyed her less than most. As a result I enjoyed her friendship, shared her love of critters, laughed out loud many times at her dry wit. May she rest in peace.

She was my "pen Pal" on Facebook. I enjoyed her wit and dry humor. We shared a love of cats and all things googly eyes. We never met, but I felt that we had. I miss greatly.
