Montville - William E. Hewitt, 72, passed away on Monday, Dec. 26, 2011, at home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous battle with cancer.

Carl,Clint,Hewitt family,
I had the distinct pleasure of working with Bill for several years on Fisher's Island. Bill was generally the man on the job who had the most complete understanding of the task and the best way to accomplish it. He shared a lot of knowledge with me and I watched closely as he finessed his machines through difficult and seemingly impossible situations. Bill always respected the contractor pecking order and offered advice only when asked or when some novice was headed in an unsafe direction. Working with Bill was an experience, but having lunch with him was an education and very entertaining. I always looked forward to any opportunity to work with Bill,Carl and Clint. I am glad to have known him.
May he rest in peace.

My heartfelt condolences to Bill's family. Memory's of him come to the surface from so many years ago. The Methodist Youth Fellowship with Rev. Ripley, then Rev. Burdick. Sunday nights after the meetings, the Holly House for ice cream. Billy and his Dad digging out the ground for our new house,(1958). So many great memories of a wonderful person. So many memories of Bill but the one I most remember is when he took me to look at all his antique cars. I was amazed he had so many and they were absolutely beautiful..... Many years spent with Bill & Robbie, dropping by with stuff from my Gram, visiting the cats and just hanging out. You will be missed and I am very glad you lived right next door....Love you Bill.

Dear Hewitt Family:

I am deeply saddened to hear of Bill's passing. I have always had the highest regard for him since meeting and working with him at the Zagray Farm Museum. Bill was always kind, and could make anyone laugh with his great sense of humor, but most importantly someone who always took a few minutes out of his busy schedule to stop and say hello. Bill was a gifted and talented individual having the ability to troubleshoot, build or repair anything mechanical. He was always willing to share his knowledge base with others in repairing their cars, trucks, tractors, hydraulics and machinery. He could always listen to a repair challenge at the farm museum and provide a solution. Bill was forthright, but neither intimidating nor intruding. He was open, friendly, and authentic. I join you and the many others who will truly miss him, but remain grateful still for having known him. My sincere condolences go out to all of you.

With warmest regards,
