Daniel "Dan" Carty, 77, of Palm Desert and formerly of Danville, Calif., died of heart failure January 24 at Odyssey Hospice in Palm Desert. Services will be private. He was born August 19, 1935 in Greenville, Texas to Jone C. Carty and Margaret Collinsworth Carty. He married Valerie Ann Wagner on June 9, 1958 in La Jolla, Calif. A retired industrial chemist, Carty received a BA in Chemistry from University of California, Riverside in the Pioneer class of 1961, a MA with Honors in Chemistry from the University of Hawaii in 1963 and a PhD in Organic Chemistry from Stanford University in 1967. In 1968 he held a post-doctoral position at the Institute fur Organische Chemie at Universitat Karlsruhe in Professor Doctor Rudolf Criegee's group. Carty worked at three industrial labs during his career: Stanford Research Institute (high stability fluids), Rohm and Haas Laboratories (plastics modifiers and acrylic emulsions) and Clorox Research and Development (consumer products). He is author/co-author of 21 patents and several journal articles. Carty was an emeritus member of the American Chemical Society. He was active in the Water Quality Association, serving on its Board of Directors (2002) and as Chairman of the Science Advisory Committee (1999). He also served on the water treatment committee of NSF International from 1992-2002. Carty served as Scoutmaster of Troop 63, BSA from 1975-1980. He was active in the YMCA Indian Guide/Princess program for 20 years, serving as Chairman of the Board for San Ramon, Calif., YMCA in 1996. Carty was also in the National Guard and Army Reserve for almost 20 years, retiring as a Colonel. He was a distinguished graduate from the US Army Armor School, Ft. Knox, Ky., finishing first among 110 junior officers. More recently, during his retirement years, Dan was active in The Stanford Club of the Desert, serving as Treasurer in 2006-8 (a job passed down to him by his wife, Valerie). Volunteering with his wife as Marshals in the Bob Hope Classic (Humana) and volunteer work for the BNP Paribas plus genealogy research and water quality consulting rounded out his days. Dan enjoyed life to the fullest and always had a great sense of humor through good times and bad. He particularly enjoyed traveling all over the world, skiing, sailing, football, camping, tennis, golf, fishing, reading, driving sports cars and best of all sharing these activities with his family and friends. Carty is survived by his wife of 54 years, Valerie; a son Craig Wagner Carty (Ana) of Danville, Calif.; a daughter, Carolyn Carty Barber (Brent) of McKinney, Texas; a daughter, Christina Carty-Francis (Jason) of Concord, Calif.; a sister, Daisy Hutching of Valley Center, Calif., and 7 grandchildren.

Thank you. I just discovered this Guest Book on Desert Sun's website. I don't believe too many people know about it. It is a great service to the bereaved and their loved ones. RIP dear husband Dan. I miss you terribly and look forward to joining you again one day. Love from your wife, Valerie

To Val: The few times that we had an opportunity to know Dan and his full life of work, service and good times makes us wish we could have known him better. Our condolences to you and your family.
