Donald DeBoer Obituary

Donald Jay DeBoer

Donald Jay DeBoer, 87, of Cathedral City passed away quietly at Desert Regional Sep. 22, 2017. Don was born May 3, 1930, the eldest son of Chester and Winnie (Kruis) DeBoer. He graduated from El Monte High School in 1948 and continued his studies at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles (BIOLA), Multnomah School of the Bible, and Northwestern Seminary of Minneapolis.

"Preacher Don" was active in ministries of all sorts in southern California and the Coachella Valley: preaching, singing, playing piano and organ, volunteering, and generally carrying on. In 2007 Don was named Board Member of the Year by the Desert Business Association. He received special recognition in 2013 for his many volunteer hours at Revivals stores. Don enjoyed having coffee, listening to the Gaithers, swimming, telling stories, and welcoming visitors to the area. He also gave personal tours of Desert Christ Park in Yucca Valley. In addition, he was very proud of his Dutch heritage.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct. 22 at 11:30 by his friends of Bloom in the Desert Ministries at the Demuth Community Center in Palm Springs.

Don seemed like a very passionate man. He was my pastor in the mid seventies @ CBT. My parents used to stop by over his home many Sundays after church. He lived in an old Victorian/ tudor style home, not sure where..Maybe Gardena. I appreciated him, had good feelings that he was a genuine man; but I knew him only from the pulpit et al.

Don was my pastor as a teenager grades 7-9. I remember him having a 1957 or so Dodge convertible in which I rode with him to camp. I also remember him teaching whole books of the Bible and writing the outlines on a chalkboard as part of our Evening services. It was there I began my thirst to know the Bible.

I sure will miss you, my friend. You are very special to me. I've been looking for you but now I know that you are safe. I just looked down and there was a penny. A sign from you in heaven, I am sure.

So sorry I missed seeing the announcement in time to attend the service. Don and I go back many years in Long Beach. He was very helpful to me in many ways. To his son Don, and all the family I extend my deepest sympathy. We will all miss him.

Don was a dear friend whose wisdom I highly prized. As a colleague, he led adjunct worship services for our church for many years. He was a joyful spirit, and his gospel piano playing was always uplifting.
