Edward Cunningham Obituary

Edward "Ned" Hugh Cunningham

San Diego - Edward "Ned" Hugh Cunningham, of San Diego, CA, passed away on August 30th, after a courageous year and a half long battle with lung cancer.

Ned was born in Providence, the son of Edward and Dorothy (McMahon). He was raised on Mission Place in Mount Pleasant with his older sister, Paula. Ned played hockey, basketball and baseball throughout his childhood and teenage years, graduated from Mt Pleasant High School, and attended the University of Rhode Island, to play basketball on an ROTC scholarship. At URI, he was also a member of the Phi Mu Delta Fraternity.

After college graduation, Ned served in the US Army in San Francisco, CA. When he returned home to Providence, Ned landed a job with Allendale Insurance Company (now FM Global) and moved to Southern California, where he worked, coached his boys, and played golf and tennis until he retired. Through tennis, Ned created everlasting friendships. In retirement, he moved to Palm Desert, lived on a golf course, played golf, and established new long-lasting friendships.

Ned was the proud father of Kevin (Suzan) of Newbury Park, CA and Kyle (Danielle) of San Diego, CA. He was the loving grandfather of Katherine, Kamille, and Brittnie.

Ned is survived by his wife Bonnie of Totowa, NJ, sons, granddaughters, and his nieces/nephews - Michelle, Paul, Charles, James, and Nicole.

Special thanks to the amazing staffs at UCSD Health Moores Cancer Center - La Jolla, La Vida Del Mar Senior Community, and Apreva Hospice, who provided fantastic, compassionate care to Ned.

To honor Ned, Celebrations of Life will be held in the future in Thousand Oaks, CA and with family in RI. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Fund # 6764- Lung Cancer Precision Oncology Research at the UCSD Health Moores Cancer Center.

It is August 30, 2020. One year ago today, my husband Ned, passed away.

Remembrances of Ned are everywhere. Some are recurring, some are transient and some are unexpected but all are welcome and comforting. Looking through our photographs, like these from 1988 and 1991 reinforce cherished memories which sustain me.

Ned made me a better person. His influence still guides me as our special relationship continues.

Our wedding bands are treasured reminders of our life together. Mine on my hand and Ned’s, with our birthstones, close to my heart.
Ned, you are just away. Never far from me.

Your loving wife, Bonnie

It is March 16, 2020. Twenty three years ago, after a ten year courtship, Ned and I married. Ned's proposal on one knee still remains sweet and loving as this graceful man held my hand in his.

Ned was many things to me including, at times, a mentor. He was also a pleasant, intelligent traveling companion and we enjoyed our vacations and numerous cross country trips.

In Palm Desert, I would watch Ned arrive at the 18th tee which was across from our home on the golf course. I can still see him waving when he saw me.

I have countless, indelible memories of Ned including the first time I saw him wearing a tuxedo. We had prepared for a Christmas party and there he was...so tall and elegant!

We were compatible in many ways and we shared a successful, loving marriage. That love and my memories continue to bring me peace.

Rest Well, Dear Husband, we will always hold you in our hearts.

Your wife, Bonnie

Sincere condolences to Ned's family with his passing. I played golf with him 100's of times in Palm Desert. Great memories of a great guy. He will be missed.
We would commiserate over the years the fact that neither one of us had a hole in one after years of golf. Then in 2009 I got one and Ned was the first person I shared that with. Subsequently, Ned had two of them over the next few years and came out ahead in the race. Lots of fun at Chaparral Country Club.
