James Clapper
James, "Jim", "Popo" Clapper passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully, surrounded by family on January 6, 2016, just 11 days shy of his 86th birthday. Jim was born the middle child of Verna and Warren Clapper in East Canton, Ohio. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth, who passed away in June 2016. He will be forever missed by his son Dr. Michael Clapper (Nancy), his daughter Becky Fait (Barry), his grandchildren Charlie, Emily, and Brian Clapper, Lindsay Fait Bullough (Braden), Brittany Fait Jackson (Lorenzo), and Coleman Fait. He was enamored with his great-grandchildren, Max and Lola Jackson! He is also survived by his brother Dick and his family of Strongsville, Ohio.
Jim was a proud U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean War. He then went to work for United Airlines for an impressive 39 years, beginning at the Akron/Canton airport before moving the family West in 1962. The remainder of his career was spent at LAX before he retired in 1991. Working for United Airlines enabled Jim and Liz to travel the world. Their favorite destination was the Colony Surf in Honolulu. Jim and Liz enjoyed many outdoor activities like boating, golfing, traveling with friends and family, and they even attempted snow skiing.
While in Los Angeles, they enjoyed close proximity to their older grandchildren and were able to attend many of the kids' games and activities. Popo was famous for his spaghetti and was always willing to feed the teams. In 2004, Jim and Liz relocated to La Quinta to be closer to their family who lived in Palm Springs. One of Jim's favorite pastimes was attending USC football games. He was a devoted fan as his son and granddaughter Emily attended USC for a combined 13 years. Football Saturdays and Trojan victories brought him boundless joy.
Jim was active with the Masons for many years allowing him to participate in numerous charitable activities. Jim was also a member of the Desert Sunbirds, a group of retired United Airlines employees here in the Coachella Valley. The family thanks the Sunbirds for their kindness during this sad time.
Jim was truly a shining star, beloved by family and friends. He led a full and happy life and will be missed. There will be a private inurnment at Riverside National Cemetery with immediate family. Any memorial donations can be made to the Freemasons' Grand Charity.
We love you, Popo. Remember to Fight On!
