Jean Blackstone Obituary

Jean Steffan Blackstone of Palm Desert, Calif. passed away peacefully on October 26, 2009. She was born in Freeport, Ill. on June 24, 1913, the only child of Albert and Bernice Steffan. Jean attended Hollywood High School and graduated with highest honors. In addition she became a student of both classical music and dance. At an early age she was a favorite in the piano circuit. Her star performances of Franz Liszt's "St. Francis Walking on the Water" and Paderewski's "Polonaise" were among her sons' favorites and are well remembered. After spending one year at Stanford University, she married James H. Blackstone Jr. and became an active and effective pastor's wife both musically and socially. In 1946, the family moved to Palm Springs, where the couple served the Palm Springs Community Church until 1974, when Dr. Blackstone retired. Their move to Vista, Calif., allowed him to serve the Carlsbad Community Church until 1988, at which time they returned to the desert they loved, and resided at The Fountains at the Carlotta in Palm Desert. Jean will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her two sons, James H. Blackstone III and Richard M. Blackstone, together with many grandchildren, great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by daughter, Bonnie Jean Runcorn in 1989. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3:00 PM, Sunday, November 8, 2009 at The Carlotta, 41505 Carlotta Dr., Palm Desert, (760) 346-5420.

At last I am finding out why I haven't heard from my long time friend, Jean Blackstone. She was one of the loveliest , most beautiful Christian ladies whom I have ever known. I was a teenager in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when Dr. Blackstone became our pastor. He and Jean had come from Clarence McCartney's church in Pennsylvania. Dr. B was an incredible singer, who removed himself from the pulpit in order to add his voice to the choir. His favorite song at that time was "His Eye is On the Sparrow". At the piano was his wife, Jean, a very accomplished pianist. They were an inspiration to all of teenagers, being only in their upper '30,s" themselves. After the evening service, we went to their beautiful home each Sunday for "Singspiration". Jean was a most gracious hostess. My love for the Word of God and for great hymns of the faith began with this wonderful couple. I am sorry to hear of Jean's passing---but I know she was eager to go, and to be with the Lord she loved, and to join her dear husband. And I remember you Jim, as "Jimmy" who got lost the day they moved to Cedar Rapids. You lived on 4th Avenue, I believe! Memories. Wilaura Sue Skien Bradshaw (Dr. Douglas E.)

Dr. Jim and Jean were our spiritual leaders and friends from the time we moved to Palm Springs in 1959, and continuing after we moved to Carlsbad in 2004. My Grayson passed away in 2007. Dr. Jim performed our daughter's wedding in the beautiful sanctuary there. My friendship with Jean was very personal in a small group, The Sandwich Club, for many, many years.
I extend my sincere sympathy to the family, but we all know Jean and Jim are together in heaven. Lorraine Dix

Jean Blackstone was a beautiful lady who always had a smile on her face and love in her heart. She and Dr. Jim were an important part of our growing up in Palm Springs...our family life, our religious life, our education, their children who are our friends. Dr. Jim married Gayle and I some 52 years ago. What a great life she had with her wonderful family, both related and in the community. God bless. Gayle and Jack McDonald

Dear Blackstone Family,
Dr and Mrs Blackstone were so important to me in my young life. We came to the Community Chuch in 1960, when I was 5 years-old. Even as our paths took different directions, I kept in touch with them and still enjoy re-reading Dr. Jim's notes to me.
I'm so thankful that we will all be together again!
Please know that you are in my prayers.
With much love, Laura Janes
