She lived life to the fullest and made every second count by bringing fun and love to her family and friends. Her love for life included her passions for golf, bridge and flower arranging.
Joan was a lifelong resident of Portland, Oregon. She was born July 31, 1925 along with her identical twin sister Jean Irwin Hoffman, "Je Je".
For over three decades she and her sister were partners in the design firm of Jo-Je Ltd.
Along with her late husband, Ambassador Alan "Punch" Green Jr., she was active in Republican politics in Oregon.
In 1981, she accompanied "Punch" to Washington DC after his appointment by President Reagan as Chairman of the Federal Maritime Commission.
In 1989, she and "Punch" moved to Bucharest after his appointment by President Bush as U.S. Ambassador to
Romania.
During the Romanian Revolution, Joan lead an overnight evacuation by armed convoy of U.S. and other foreign dependants from Bucharest to Sofia, Bulgaria.
Joan was active during her life as a director and trustee in several Oregon institutions including Lewis and Clark
College, Friends of Timberline and the Portland Garden Club. She also served on the boards of the Friends of the U.S. Arboretum in Washington D.C., the Garden Club of America, and many years as an artistic traveling judge for the Garden Club's national competitions.
Joan was preceded in death by her husband Alan "Punch" Green, Jr. She is survived by her three daughters, Carter (Gregg) Peterson of Wayzata, MN, Kelsey (John) Grout of Portland, and Ladd (John) Mengel of Chicago, IL. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Laddie, Kelsey and Clark Peterson, Wesley, Eloise and Gordon Grout, Jack and Charlie Mengel; by her twin sister, Jean Irwin Hoffman and friend Dan Bell; and by her devoted friend, Jim Robbins.
Celebrations of her life will be held in Palm Springs at her residence on February 13, 2007 at 4:00 pm and in Portland on Thursday, February 15, 2007 at The Town Club at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Friends of Timberline or The Western Art Council in Palm Springs.
