Otis Sampson Obituary

Otis L. Sampson passed away peacefully on May 16, 2011 of natural causes at 100 years old. He was born in Dartmouth, Mass. on January 19, 1911, the son of Orie David Wilson Sampson and Lydia A. Brightman. He was the loving husband of Marion Sampson to whom he was married for 63 years until she passed on March 1, 2011. Marion was a beautiful young Welsh woman whom he met while convalescing in England after being wounded in World War II by a piece of 88 artillery shrapnel. Early in his youth he had traveled to the West for adventure and this is where he came across the desert of the Coachella Valley and knew immediately it would one day be his home. Upon returning home in 1930 to Massachusetts, he joined the U.S. Army Cavalry as a horse soldier and was stationed at Fort Ethan Allen, Vermont. In 1933 he bought his way out of the U.S. Army for $200 dollars. In 1942, with the World War declared by the United States upon Germany, Mr. Sampson rejoined the U.S. Army and became a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, 505th Unit where he distinguished himself both in combat and as a Champion boxer for the Division. He would eventually make all four combat jumps for the 82nd Airborne Division which included Sicily, Italy, Normandy and Holland and was badly wounded in the Holland campaign. He was shipped back to the United States by the Army to convalesce in Florida. When he healed properly, and learned a new trade, he sent for his young bride, Marion and they were married in 1948. They travelled west and settled in the Coachella Valley in 1949 where he has made his home since. Mr. Sampson was a cabinetmaker by trade and worked throughout the desert valley. Some of the more prominent jobs he held during his time in the valley were for the Silver Spur Ranch, the Walter Annenberg Estate and the Coachella Valley Water Company. He also became an author when he published his accounts of his war efforts during WWII in his book titled "Time Out for Combat". He brought up his family in this desert; a daughter, Dawn D. Sampson and Gary G. Sampson. His son by a previous marriage, Otis L. Sampson Jr., was brought up in the east by his mother, Irene Loftus Sampson. Mr. Sampson was predeceased by his sisters, Vilena and Beatrice; and brothers, David, Walter, Silas, Francis, and Herbert. His brother, Irwin Sampson now lives in Moscow, Idaho. He also had five grandchildren, Donna LeClair, Steve Sampson, Erik and Ethan Karchefski, and Shanna Schifferdecker and six great grandchildren all whom will miss his warmth and love. Otis also had many interests throughout the desert, including studying geology and desert wildlife. Through these interests, he had made many friends who are too numerous to mention but will all miss his friendship. Tom Brokaw had it right with men like Otis Sampson when he named Otis's generation as the "Greatest Generation". He will be missed by all the lives he has touched. A memorial service and interment will be held at Forest Lawn, 69855 Ramon Road, Cathedral City, and CA. on Monday, May 23, 2011 at 3:00 PM which will be followed by a reception for family and friends.

Otis was a dear friend and neighbor for over 10yrs back in the 80s and 90s. I loved talking to him daily. I was always up and walking for many miles everyday. He was a pure joy to get to know. I knew his wife. What a sweet lady she was. I loved going to his home he would show off his metals from the war and had beautiful rocks that he loved collecting. I met his older brother who was still parachuting out of planes in his 80s. I loved Otis like family. I had 3 young boys he helped keep a eye on all the many kids in our neighborhood. May you RIP Otis you are missed by so many. May we meet again someday. What a joy of a man.

I have an identical picture of Marion and Otis in the same chair with the light on-- taken when I visited them in February of 2011 just a couple days before Marion passed. I really enjoyed my visits with them she was so sweet and Otis enjoyed passing on several of his WW2 stories. I visit them when in town at the Cemetery.

Sincere condolences to the Sampson family.
My uncle Otis, I hardly remember as a youngster. I remember uncle Si, uncle Herby, and uncle Dave.
I do remember a pet alligator at the grand-parents home in Westport. I do beleive it was a pet of uncle Otis.
My mom passed away recently and I found a picture of uncle Otis in his military uniform. I was so proud of that picture I showed it to everyone in the family. I am going to try to enclose the picture.
Again, very sorry to hear of uncle Otis passing away.

My condolences to the Sampson family. Otis and Marion represented the best of the Greatest Generation.
I was able to visit with Otis' friend Dennis O'Loughlin before he passed a few years ago, Otis credited Denny with saving his life after he was severely wounded while attacking the Bridge at Nijmegen. Something I picked up from both men was they shared a friendship that few of us will ever experience. Then shared some adventures together after the war as well.
I was honored to attend his 100th and also visit the home for the last time a week or so after party. I shall miss my friends Otis and Marion but also grateful that I had the chance to know them...

I met Otis when he came to a 2004 D-Day program at the Cathedral City Library. He attended the program in his uniform and stole the show with his amazing tales about WWII. I feel honored to have known him even for such a brief time.

I had the great honor of meeting Mr. Sampson at the Palm Desert Library event on the D-Day anniversary. He was truly representative of the "Greatest Generation". I told him at the time and will say now none of my brothers or myself ever had to go to war, and it is because of brave men like him who stood in harm's way on our behalf. Thank you Otis! May God rest your soul....

My condolences to the Sampson family. I met Otis when I was in Dr. Seff's Geology class at the College of the Desert. We went on a week long field trip with the class. He was so full of life and energy and he had many, many stories to tell. What a great life he led. We still kept in touch, although not as much in the last few years. Reading the article about him in the Desert Sun was a real treat. I know he made a lasting impression in the minds of all who knew him....I am one of them. May God bless you all.

Yor father was truly a great man. He was always more than glad to share his vast experience and knowledge of life.
Growing up as a your next door neighbor, Sam showed me the way to one of my greatest passions - hiking the local mountains and trials of the desert.

Dear Dawn and Gary,
Harold and I lived as your neighbors when you were children. We thought so much of both your mother and father. We have lots of happy memories when Terri, Tim, Dawn and Gary were kids around the neighborhood and Sam and Marian our neighbors.
We are sorry to read that Sam has passed away. I saw him last Veteran's Day and talked to him when Marian passed away.
What a life! He really lived it to the fullest--you have some good genes and a great example.
Our sympathy to you both and your children. We cared for them, too.
Harold, Joanne, Terri and Tim Hardy
