Steven DeForest Obituary

Steven Philip DeForest born November 18, 1943 in Salinas, Calif. passed August 4, 2010 in Brawley, Calif. Steve put family first and believed in order to take care of family a hard days work was the key. While in Junior High, Steve would sneak off and work in produce, this continued until his Junior year in high school when he joined the "fruit tramp family" full time. It was produce that brought Steve to Brawley where he settled with his family in the early 1970s. Steve took pride in continuing the family business founded by his father John Milton DeForest who passed in 1986. JM DeForest became Steve's passion, working from sun-up to way past sun-down and always saying, "there's just not enough time in the day"! Of course Steve was never too busy for conversation. After the loss of his mother, Mary Henrietta DeForest, Steve took care of his grandparents who lived on their ranch Angel Mountain in Mesa Grande, Calif. It became a tradition for Steve to celebrate special occassions and holidays with his family on the ranch. Sharing his love of the ranch with friends gave him a sense of fulfillment. Generous almost to a fault, Steve was willing to do anything for anyone. True to the saying, Steve would give the shirt off his back. How lucky we all were to have Steve in our life, the smiles we saw, the kindness he gave and the love we will always hold in our heart! He will never be forgotten! Steve is survived by his wife Marilyn of 41 years; six children, Lori DeForest of Florida, Mandi Honeysuckle of Prescott, Nikki Robinson (Robbie) of El Centro, Steven DeForest (Mary) of Yuma, John DeForest (Gina) of Brawley and Stephanie DeForest of Imperial, brother Lynwood DeForest of Brawley; nine grandchildren, Tamra Dorsey, Krystal Spohn, Bradley DeForest, Donny DeForest, Ty Robinson, Cheyenne Robinson, Emily DeForest, Karley DeForest, John DeForest and seven great grandchildren; numerous neices and nephews as well as a large extended family of close friends. Viewing will be from 6:00-9:00 PM, Wednesday, August 11, 2010 at Frye Chapel in Brawley. Funeral service will commence at 10:00 AM, Thursday, August 12, 2010 at Faith Assembly in Imperial. Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Friday, August 13, 2010 at Oak Hill Memorial Park in Escondido.

Please accept my sincerest acknowledgement of your sorrow at this time. I'm Mel Shaffer's daughter. My dad died June 22nd, but over the years (and in spite of their differences) he spoke highly of Steve. I lost my husband two years ago so I understand how you must be feeling. What do you say about a man who was one of a kind? Steve was always willing to lend an ear, an idea, or an insight from his years of experience. If you were trying to define the quintessential produce man, Steve was it. He was truly a rock of our industry and his passing will leave our corner of the world a little less bright. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by our family.
May god bless your family during this time of loss as we celebrate that we got to share the light that Steve shined on all who were lucky enough to call him Friend.
Sincerely,
The Mohamed Families

Deforest Family, I will miss my calls, and chats (lengthy usually), with Steve. He was such an honorable man and was always true to his colors. His loss to the industry is without words. He was like a second father to many of us, always being there in a time of need, or just listening when you truly needed him too. Without question he has left a wonderful family to continue the Deforest legacy, in which he took great pride in. My families thoughts and prayers go out to all of you during this extremely difficult time. And as Steve always said "Is there anything I can do for you today, Boss?" Remember, we are all here for you. Love Tony Tew & Family

To the DeForest family: May God keep you and bless you, give you strength and comfort. Steve gave me my first job when I came to California. I started as a co-driver with my dad, Clifford who passed away in '90, and when the time came, he gave me my own truck. He put a lot of trust in a "wet-behind-the-ears kid" and I tried to bust my butt for him. He also helped me out in some lean times when I really needed it. I have nothing but respect for the man. The world will be a lesser place with out him and Heaven the better for him. I will surely miss "Boss" and I will say a prayer for all of you, his family who will miss him most of all.

With deep & true respect,
Byron McClure

Steve was a great boss. I worked for him and his father at the Brawley office with Linda Arviso and Eloise Henos in the 1980's.
What fun we had. Mike did some legal work for your family and liked Steve very much.

Marilyn and all of your family: We would like to give you every ounce of consolement, all of our love to you and your families in your loss of a great man. We don't know how you're grieving with such a loss, but you are and you will. Just know that all of you are in our thoughts and prayers. For over fifty years, Frosty and I had such a close and special friendship; probably as close to being brothers as you can be without actually being related. Steve always told Bert and I he was praying for us when we were having health issues and showed us that he really cared and he always told us how much he loved us. We can't tell you how much we are going to miss him dropping by and calling. A harder working man I've never known. It never got too hot, too windy, too muddy, too cold, too early nor too late for Steve. The man was always ready. Oh, the trails that we've been down. The front part of my heart says these words are inadequate, but the backside of my heart tells me that this is all that I can say on this page. Miss him? Yes. He will be so with me until the day I die.
We will be there for you in any capacity any time you need us.

The DeForest Family: My thoughts and prayers are with you. Steve was a wonderful man and larger than life. He will be greatly missed. There was never a gathering at Steve and Mary's house that I didn't get to visit with "Big Steve" and hear his stories. He was a wonderful man and even though Emily, Denice and I were not really family, he always treated us like family. Emily and Denice remember fondly the times they went to the ranch with Steve and Mary and got to join in the family fun. Our hearts go out to you all.
