Timothy Wright Obituary

NEW YORK (AP) — The Rev. Timothy Wright, the Grammy-nominated gospel singer and composer known for his up-tempo praise songs and powerful mass choir sound, has died. He was 61.

Wright, who was seriously injured in a car crash that killed his wife and grandson, died early Thursday at the Bronx Veterans Hospital, music agent Will Bogle said.

Timothy Wright was the pastor at Grace Tabernacle Christian Center Church of God in Christ, located in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. He released more than a dozen gospel recordings, writing many of the songs. His latest album, "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus," came out in 2007.

In 1994, his record "Come Thou Almighty King," with the New York Fellowship Mass Choir, made the Billboard Top 20 charts for gospel albums and was nominated for a Grammy for best traditional soul gospel album.

He got another nomination in that category in 1999 for "Been There Done That," recorded with the B/J Mass Choir and featuring Myrna Summers.

"Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" features the New York Fellowship Mass Choir. The title track, written by Wright and his wife and recorded live at a Church of God in Christ convocation, expresses the plight of a woman displaced during Hurricane Katrina: She encourages herself and others by calling the name of Jesus. Among the other songs on the album was "You Must Come In At the Door."

According to the book "Uncloudy Days: The Gospel Encyclopedia," by Bil Carpenter, the Brooklyn-born Wright began playing piano for his local church at age 12 and also began composing at a young age.

By his early 20s, he was music director at Brooklyn's Washington Temple Church of God in Christ.

He began writing songs for such fellow musicians as Mattie Moss Clark and the Rev. Isaac Douglas, according to Carpenter's book, and in 1976 formed the Timothy Wright Concert Choir. Among the choir's albums were "Who's on the Lord's Side?" and "Do You Know the Light?"

Wright was critically injured July 4 in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 80 near Loganton, Pa. Another car was going the wrong way when it struck Wright's car.

His wife, Betty Wright, 58, was killed in the crash, and their 14-year-old grandson, D.J. Wright, died later at a hospital.

The driver of the wrong-way car, John Pick, also was killed, while a passenger in a third car was injured.

The Wrights were returning from a Church of God in Christ conference in Detroit, said Leroy Johnson, a trustee at Grace Tabernacle.

I thank God for allowing this man to cross my path. I had classes with Timothy when we were both working on our master's degree, and worked on a class project with him. Thank God for his knowledge and encouragement I made it thru. My heart is truly sadden to here that he is gone from this earth, but praise God for all that he imparted to others in the name of the Lord. I will never forget him.

For Timothy...As the founding
member of Pink Floyd you
truly made your mark in
the music industry.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

May 7, 2009

To the Wright & Grace Tabernacle Family,
The Lord blessed me to meet Elder Wright over twenty five years ago at the COGIC Holy Convocation in Memphis, TN.At this time I was a teenager and attending my first Holy Convocation.Elder Wright was singing Yes I Want To Testify @ the Midnite Musical. This was an awesome experience for me because when Elder Wright was introduced to sing it was in the wee hours of the morning and people were leaving in preparation for Official Day.Elder Wright began singing w/passion,power, energy,& conviction that inspires and motivates you to give GOD praise and become part of this exciting musical experience as if you're a part of the choir.Elder Wright had this unique ability to turn the entire auduience into a mass choir.By the time Elder Wright finished singing I Want to Testify the auditorium had refilled itself with worshippers and we had church all over again. From that moment on I've been inspired, energized, empowered, engaged,& strengthened by the music of Elder Wright.God has granted me numerous opportunities to share musically with Elder Wright through the Holy Convocation, UNAC now AIM and across this great nation us ours.I will never forget Elder Wright's humility and eagerness to share with other artists through the venue of gospel music.Nor shall I forget his willingness to share his wisdom to encourage and educate about music ministry in the church. He also was a model of integrity, character in supporting his family and his mission as a musician and minister of the gospel.I will never forget the last time I shared with Elder Wright musically in 2006 @ Life International COGIC in St. Louis,Mo.I hadn't seen Elder Wright in about three years and thre I sat in audience as he was preparing to preach and he calls my name and Oliver is that you.He invited me to come back the next night to share with him musucally.I began following Elder Wright when I was fourteen years old I am now fourty -two years old and I still am empowered and excited when I hear his music.I am thankful that God blessed our paths to cross my life has ben enriched and blessed because of this relationship.I can honestly say Elder Wright was my friend, mentor and father in the gospel.Elder Wright we can sing with conviction you will recieve a just reward becauce you were a sanctified witness who believed in telling his testimony through song because you were a believer in Jesus Christ and counted the many blessing God bestowed upon you time and time again.Through your music ministry we've all been empowered to sing a song that the angels in heaven can't sing. Enternally Grateful Elder Oliver Washington community Empowerment Ministries

He lives on in the heart of his children, his grand children, his church family and thousands of others whose faces he never saw, but were yet mentored by the songs he sang.... I know for our church is one of those. Prayerfully submitted by the Freehold Church of God

My prayers are definately with the family and his local church. I pray that we as God's people recognize that this is not our final home and that God has called us to work while it is still day. So, please redeem the time and let's love one another and win souls to Christ so that we can have a testimony that my life was hidden in Christ.

I met Pastor Timothy Wright at GMWA in the early 90's through a friend, Brother Jeff Davis. Pastor Timothy was such a humble man to be around and to work with. Talking with him in our band and choir rehearsals that week was just like sitting down with your dad or your favorite uncle or even your own pastor. All he talked about to us young musicians was about music or the love of God. The song he wrote for the recording that year was "God Will Take Care of You" which he lead with the help of LaShun Pace. They brought the house down! I remember him getting upset that week also because some musicians and singers had this air about East Coast or West Coast being better. Pastor said there is no East or West Coast when it come down to serving the God. He said if God's not in it, then your singing and playing is in vain. He said we are ALL in this for the kingdom and to win souls, NO OTHER REASON. I thanked him the next morning in band practice for saying that in choir rehearsal. It was needed. Many singers and musicians TODAY need to follow that example. He was truly a good role model for the kingdom of God.

When he came to my church in 1999 for our Women's Choir Anniversary...he was still the same!

Pastor Timothy you will be missed but you'll never be away from our hearts. Thank you for the hits and for the word of God that you spoke while I was in your presense. I just close out by saying Jesus, Jesus, Jesus AMEN.
