Herbert Pivonka Obituary

A Funeral Mass for Herbert Daniel Pivonka, 92, of Caldwell, is set for 10 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Frenstat, with Msgr. Leonard Pivonka officiating. Interment will follow in the Holy Rosary Cemetery. A visitation will be held, Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 5 to 7 p.m., with a Rosary following at Strickland Funeral Home in Caldwell. Mr. Pivonka passed away on May 26, 2012 at Burleson St. Joseph's Manor in Caldwell.
Herbert was born January 21, 1920 to Ludwig Piwonka and Frances Hruska Piwonka in Frenstat, Texas. Herbert married Geraldine Schoppe on September 2, 1947. He was an usher, a choir member and a Parish Council Member at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church of Frenstat. Herbert was a member of the Knights of Columbus, K.J.T. # 12 Society and a Life Member of the American Legion Post #451, and also a Life Member of the V.F.W. # 4458. He entered the U.S. Army in July of 1942, where he served in England, France, Belgium and Germany. Herbert was awarded G.C., ETO, four Battle Stars, one arrowhead, a Purple Heart, one OLC, Bronze Star and a Combat Inf. Badge. He was wounded in France and Germany in 1944 and discharged in 1945. He worked as a mechanic for the Ford Dealer in Bryan, U.S. Navy in Orange, and the U.S. Navy Chase Field in Beeville.
Herbert is survived by his wife, of 64 years, Geraldine Pivonka of Caldwell, sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald W. and Scarlette Pivonka of Burleson, Thomas G. Pivonka of Bay City, Msgr. Leonard D. Pivonka of Alice, Texas, Richard J. and Carol Pivonka of Bryan, Carl E. and Laura Pivonka of Billings, Montana; daughter and son-in-law, Janice Marie and Jeffery Popp of Bay City, sisters, Geraldine Smith of Caldwell, Dorothy Kubena of Caldwell, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson, Rett Pivonka; sisters, Lillie Vykukal, Rosalie Vykukal, Alvina Sobotik, Milady Marek; and brother, Henry Piwonka.
Memorials may be made to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Church in Frenstat Cemetery Fund. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Strickland Funeral Home of Caldwell.
