John Fackler Obituary

John P. Fackler Jr.

July 31, 1934 - February 25, 2023

John was born in Toledo, Ohio, the eldest of three sons born to the Reverend John P. Fackler and Ruth Eleanor Moehring Fackler. He graduated in 1952 from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo and spent his first year in college at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1953, he transferred to Valparaiso University in Indiana and graduated with a B.A. in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics. It was at Valparaiso that he met his wife, Naomi Steege.

In 1956, after marrying Naomi, John returned to MIT where he completed his PhD in Inorganic Chemistry in 1960. His first academic position was Assistant Professor at the University of California-Berkeley from 1960-62. From 1962 until 1983 John served the department of Chemistry at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, eventually serving as Department Head, and later rising to the distinguished title of Teagle Professor in 1978. In 1977, he took a brief sabbatical to accept the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship at Sidney Sussex College at Cambridge University, England. He and his family spent six months living in Great Shelford village near the Cam River.

While in Cleveland he received many professional honors, was actively involved in St. John's Lutheran Church and the Cleveland Lutheran High School Association, and helped raise a loving family of five children.

In 1983, John accepted a position as the Dean of the College of Science at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. He served in that role until 1992, leaving the deanship to focus on research and teaching as a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry. He was the first Texas A&M dean to be named a Distinguished Professor, in 1987. He officially retired in 2006, but remained active in the University until the time of his passing. During their time in College Station, John and Naomi were active members of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church.

Throughout his illustrious professional career, John was bestowed a myriad of accolades and honors, authored numerous scientific books and professional articles, and actively pursued his research passion in gold chemistry.

John enjoyed working with students at all levels. He lectured to gifted high school students in Cleveland, guided over 25 undergraduate research scholars and was a Dreyfuss Senior Mentor after formal retirement. He guided the research of over 80 PhD. and MSc. students throughout his long career. He gave many endowed lectures including to the National Science Teachers Association (1976), the Robert Welch Foundation (1992), and was the Texas A&M University Distinguished Faculty Lecturer (2000). He lectured at universities in every US state and in over 15 foreign countries. He held funded appointments at Universidad de Bogota, and Universidad de Bucaramanga in Colombia, Indiana University, University of California Santa Barbara, Cambridge University, and the Technical University of Munich.

After formal retirement in 2006, John taught on a part-time basis with research support and closed his laboratory in 2014 when he and Naomi moved to The Woodlands, Texas. They became active at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, singing in the choir, teaching bible class, and serving on committees. John was active in the Woodlands Rotary Club and spent many years on the Council of the Resident's Association of the Forum where they lived, including three years as president.

Besides travel, which both he and Naomi enjoyed, John was an avid golfer at The Woodlands Country Club, "shooting his age" more than a few times, enjoying many rounds with his golf buddies from church and the community, as well as with his son and grandson. He enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing, reading nonfiction literature, and listening to classical music. He rarely missed a golf tournament on television. A good glass of wine, single malt or Irish whiskey, or a dry martini with a lemon twist were always welcome.

John was preceded in death by his loving wife of nearly 62 years, Naomi Paula Fackler; and his daughter, Cheryl Ruth Fackler Hug. He will be greatly missed by his surviving children, Dr. Kathy Fackler Chapman (M. John), Karla Fackler Grafton (David), Dr. John Fackler (Lee), and Dori Fackler; as well as grandchildren, Jenna Chapman, Ian Chapman (Sasha Sidmore), Nicholas Hug (Naomi Pacalin), Colin Hug (Natalie), Andrew Grafton (Fatemeh Abdollahi), Rebekah Grafton, Dan Grafton, Ava Fackler, and Owen Fackler.

A memorial service will be held at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in The Woodlands, Texas, on Friday, March 3, at 11 a.m. A service of committal will follow at 2:30 p.m., at Klein Memorial Park in Magnolia.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Lord of Life Lutheran Church, The Rotary Club of The Woodlands Foundation or Valparaiso University (please designate either: The Reverend Martin Th. Steege Endowed Scholarship Fund, or the John and Naomi Fackler Lectureship in Chemistry and English).

I was his classmate at Devilbiss HS. Don't know why I don't remember him, as his life is very similar to mine. I gradjuated from Dental School at Ohio State University and spent many years in Hawaii. Developed a mile of oceanfront on the Big Island.

I saw John’s obit in ChŊ News recently. I met John Fackler only once when I was about 7 years old, but he left a lifelong impression and inspiration which changed my life. His father knew my father and he visited us for a Sunday dinner in Toledo, probably as he was traveling back to Cleveland to CWRU. First, he predicted when and where we could observe the Echo satellite passing overhead which we indeed saw. Then he taught me how to make a rocket out of recently used wine bottle and the cork using CO2 produced from vinegar and baking soda as propellant. I played with that rocket until I lost the cork. He sparked a deep interest in chemistry in me at a young age. I loved the way chemistry explains nature and the mysteries of how the human body works, and I eventually achieved a PhD in bioorganic chemistry. John was indeed a miraculous person with a gift for inspiring people. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

We never met but my mom (Liz Fackler Jones) had plenty of stories to tell and enjoyed spending time with you and Naomi while visiting College Station. When I was at UC Irvine, dating a chemistry student, imagine my surprise seeing your name on a textbook and my boyfriend's surprise that I was related to the author ! Peace to the family from Liz's crew (Tracey, Michelle, Brian, and Julie)

John was a second father to me. Listless from a small Texas backwater and with questionable potential, he saw things in me I did not. John was patient with me. He crafted me into a chemistry researcher, shepherding me to a PhD and a great career. I still love and practice chemistry to this day. Without John, I don't know if any of this would have been possible. I love you very much, John. I am crying as I type this, though I am also filled with joy in knowing that you are in paradise with our Lord. God bless you and thank you. Michael Irwin, Texas A&M '02

GOD be with you as you remember John give hanks for his life and grieve his passing. I have 2 distinct memories of John. One was when I must have been quite young— maybe 4 or 5. We were visiting aunt Ruth and uncle John in Toledo. John took me for a ride in a convertible. I think that was te first time I had been in such a car. The second time was on the day of uncle John’s funeral. Many of us came back to aunt Marie’s house. I spent the afternoon trying to do some trig homework. I was having a terrible time with one problem so I finally went to John for help. He was puzzled as well until I found out I had copied the problem incorrectly. He was very gracious with me. Also John and Naomi were very good to my sister Sharon when she tried to go to Case Western.
John was a blessing to his family and obviously a blessing to our world
Peace

We're thinking of all the Fackler family as you celebrate your Dad's wonderful life. We're praying for God's peace and His love to comfort you as you mourn. I'm so grateful for the times we shared with John at family gatherings. He was a fun and jolly soul. This picture shows his big smile, and I can hear his laugh when he and my brother David shared their boyhood shenanigans. I loved to listen to them tell stories of family I never knew. John will be missed by all the Moehring Clan. He has left us with wonderful memories and inspiring faith. Each of you are apart of his large and lasting legacy. We believe that John is with those souls he loved, and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. What a blessed assurance we have, and share with all of you. RIP, dear cousin. Love, JoAnn and Bill Pinkerton

I grew up in an age where many people believed that God and science were just not compatible - one could not believe in both. John completely disproved that fallacy. I knew him and Naomi through our church in College Station. They were very active members, and any time there were questions in Sunday School, his answers could convince anyone of his faith. He was truly a committed Christian man who lived out his faith while helping countless others in their scientific quests. The world has lost a great man. Sending sympathy to his loved ones.

I was teaching in Berkley when John and Naomi were there. I sometimes babysat for them.
An exciting time to be in Berkley. Years later John and Naomi paid me a visit in Minnesota and these pass few years we shared Thanksgiving at my brother Richards in Houston. Our last time meeting was a couple of weeks a go when we played Bridge online. He claimed to be a little rusty but he beat us. It was fun and I will miss my cousin John. Long before his distinguished career, I knew him as a youthful cousin and eagerly looked forward to summer camping reunions with all the Fackler clan. He was valedictorian of DeVillbis high school in Toledo and could bring the heat when hurling a baseball.
I will savor all those fond youthful memories of a wonderful time gone by.
Goodbye Johnny- God bless !

I was fortunate to have met John Fackler when I was an undergraduate at 19 years old in 1991. His patience and kindness are most certainly what allowed me to believe I could become a chemist. I am so grateful to God for allowing me the opportunity to thank John in person once more. We enjoyed margaritas at Pappasitos just three weeks ago. John, you are forever in my heart!

A dear friend, and very close to a relative, John was like a father to me during my PhD studies in Case from 1963 to 1967. His passing takes away a friend who for 60 years was a very important person in the 63 years of my life in the United States.

Rest In peace my dear friend.
