Michael Wichern Obituary

Michael David Wichern, 60, passed away February 24, 2025 of an acute heart attack at his home in Austin, Texas. He was born September 20, 1964 in Madison, Wisconsin and spent his early years in Madison. He was an accomplished swimmer for his high school, YMCA and local swimming pool teams. Michael remained in Madison to complete his BBA from the University of Wisconsin after his parents, Dean and Dorothy Wichern, moved to College Station Texas in 1984. Michael subsequently moved to Texas and earned an MBA from the University of Texas in 1987. He then spent 22 years working for Travis County primarily in the County Auditor's office and later in the County Treasurers office before he retired. Time in the summers was often spent fishing in Canada, Montana and the boundary waters of Minnesota. Michael was a voracious reader and for a time collected first editions of books. Michael's life was marked by his love of music and animals. He was a volunteer for Austin Pets Alive for many years and often fostered dogs to prepare them for adoption. Michael's varied interests and willingness to engage and help others made him a valued friend. He received much satisfaction from contributing to the life of those around him.
Michael is survived by his parents, a brother Andrew and three nephews, Oliver, William and Henry, in Denver Colorado as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, Michael's family kindly requests memorial donations be made to Austin Pets Alive in Austin, Texas.
