Paul Sanders Obituary

Paul F. Sanders (aka Sandy)

Aug 4, 1941 - Feb 8, 2026

Paul received his Angel Wings on Sunday Feb 8th after a short battle with pancreatic cancer and he will truly be missed by many.

Paul was born in Oak Park, Illinois to Paul Venrick Sanders and Elizabeth Funston Sanders. The family moved to San Antonio when Paul was entering second grade and lived there until he left for college.

Paul sang in the Methodist Church choir growing up. He was also a lifeguard, a camp counselor, played on the football, boxing & wrestling teams during his high school years, as well as, serving as the Class President.

Paul began his college years attending Texas A & I in Kingsville for two years before transferring to the University of Texas Galveston and completing his bachelor's degree.

Paul would tell you he had many jobs while he worked his way through his extensive college career; he worked on a barge in the summers, moved furniture and trained security dogs. After receiving his bachelor's degree, Paul worked for Dun & Bradstreet as a career counselor and went from there to UT Medical Branch as a computer programmer.

While attending college and working Paul married Catherine Sanders (Cay) and started a family with twin boys Matt & Todd Sanders. Paul & Cay were involved with the Brazos Kennel Club for many years, breeding and showing Irish Wolfhounds.

However, Paul realized he truly belonged at Texas A & M in College Station, where he became a member of the Aggie family and completed his MBA in 1974 and also earned his license as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

Upon receiving his CPA Paul went to work for Ernst & Ernst in Houston until 1978 when he and former partner, Richard West, purchased a small tax practice in Bryan and worked together for 25 years as Sanders & West, CPA's.

In 2004 Paul and his second wife, Tracye, started Paul F. Sanders, CPA, which later became Sanders & Associates Tax & Accounting Solutions. Paul officially retired in 2025, although he continued to visit with clients and serve the community. Tracye, along with long-time employees and friends Dee, Heather, Jessica, Melissa and Katrina continue that legacy.

When not working Paul enjoyed hiking, canoeing, hunting, woodworking and watching football (especially the Aggies & Cowboys).

Paul was preceded in death by his parents, Paul V. and Elizabeth Sanders, as well as his siblings, Margaret Fuller, Nancy Cote & Richard Sanders.

Paul is survived by wife and partner of over 30 years, Tracye Sanders; Sons Matt (Jennifer) Sanders, Todd Sanders; Stepsons Paul Dobbs Jr and Kevin (Alana) Dobbs; grandchildren Jordyn, Tyler, Cat and Ginny Sanders; as well as Kayla Dobbs, Ivy, Lily and Tyler Slay. His lifelong friend Dr. James Black; honorary daughter Barbara DeAnda; beloved dog Sasha and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A Life Celebration in memory of Paul will be held on Saturday, the 28th of February 2026, at the Benjamin Knox Gallery located at 405 University Dr E., College Station. Friends and family are welcome to visit anytime between the hours of 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers please consider donating in memoriam to Brazos Valley Community Action Programs (BVCAP) care of Scott Humes, 4001 East 29th Street, Bryan, Texas 77805, where Paul proudly served as Board Treasurer for many years.

I met Paul and his partner Dick West in 1984 when I was starting my business as a financial advisor. Paul was very receptive and welcoming to a broke, struggling young man; each time we spoke was a refuge from the world. When I had actual income, Sanders and West became my CPAs, and still are. Rest in Peace.

I met Paul through Dick West, who became my CPA in 1986 (and was so until he retired). Through a second mutual friend, John Delaney, I was asked in 1987 or so to join a poker club with Paul and John plus Tony Jones, Switzer Deason, Davis McGill, Dr. Bud Wilson, and Larry Ruffino. I shared that friendly monthly poker game with these guys for about 20 years before moving to Houston. In all those years, I never heard a bad word about Paul nor did I once hear him speak ill of anyone (maybe except a few Democrats like Delaney...). He was one of the nicest guys I've ever known. For tax year 2024, Paul and his firm were kind enough to prepare my taxes for me after my wife of 40 years passed away and I had moved to Florida (the taxes were a bit difficult as she always had been the tax person in our household). And Paul would not let me pay them a penny. That's who Paul was. There's no way to say enough nice things about Paul. All his family and friends have my sincerest condolences.
