Edward Nielsen Obituary

Edward Paul Nielsen, 102, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Sept. 25, 2022, at the Vinton Lutheran Home with his family by his side. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2022, at St. John Lutheran Church in Center Point, with the Rev. Thomas C. Van Hemert officiating. Interment with military rites will be held at the Walker Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, also at the church. Edward was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Marion, Iowa, to Arnold and Henrietta (Paul) Nielsen. He graduated from Walker High School. Ed served his Country in the United States Army during World War II. On March 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Maurine Thompson in Cedar Rapids. He worked at Iowa Manufacturing for 35 years. Edward was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, where he served as chairman of the congregation and as an elder. Edward was a hobby farmer on his property on the south side of Center Point, where he lived for 72 years. He was known as “the junk man� of Center Point. Edward is survived by his children, Paul Nielsen of Walker, Roberta Cady of Center Point, Richard (Lisa) Nielsen of Calmar, Larry (Marilyn) Nielsen of Walker, Terry (Donna) Nielsen of Center Point, and Rebecca (Jeff) Hergert of Boone; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; brother, William Nielsen of Marion; and his sister, Martha Walters of Cedar Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Maurine; granddaughter, Raquel Cady; brother, Arnold Nielsen Jr.; and sister, Louise Mills. Online condolences: www.phillipsfuneralhomes.com.
