A Mass of Christian Burial for Jack will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 6, 2026, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Cascade, Iowa with Rev. Mark Osterhaus presiding. Burial will be held in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Monticello, Iowa with full military honors afforded by the Cascade American Legion Post #528.

He was born September 23, 1941 in Monticello, Iowa, son of Bernard and Mary (Minnis) Kuriger. He is a 1959 graduate of Sacred Heart Catholic School in Monticello, Iowa. He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Duluth, Minn., for 4 years, and then in the National Guard for 2 years.

On September 7, 2002 he was united in marriage to Renee Hamel in Duluth, Minn. He worked at the Picker Company installing and repairing X-ray equipment, he then did the same at St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth until his retirement.

Jack loved bicycling, especially with second wife, Renee on their tandem cycle. He was a active cyclist, participating in RAGBRAI twice. He has been Pro-Life and was very active in the chapter in Duluth and the Dubuque Chapter, participating in many marches and was also a very active Republican. He enjoyed water sports, canoeing and kayaking. He was always kind and friendly to everyone-"he never met a stranger". He could often be found tinkering, and would gladly help anyone with a plumbing or electrical issue.

He was a member of the Cascade American Legion Post #528, and proudly served as a guardian for Honor Flights when he lived in Duluth.

He is survived by his second wife, Renee Kuriger of Cascade, Iowa; one son, Peter (Sonia) Kuriger of Faribault, Minn.; two daughters, Gretchen Kuriger and Jennifer Kuriger both of Minneapolis, Minn.; three grandchildren, Andrew (Lisa) Kuriger of Minneapolis, Minn., Elaine (Robert) Anderstrom of Hampton, Iowa and Rachel Palaceo of Faribault, Minn.; one great-granddaughter Hosanna Anderstrom; and a brother-in-law, Jim Chambers of Dubuque, Iowa.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Rosemary Johnson; four sisters, Mary Ann (Frank) Miller Katherine Kuriger, Sheila Chambers and Pat Kuriger.

Camp Courageous is saddened by the recent passing of John "Jack" Kuriger, 84, of Cascade, originally from Monticello, IA.  Jack was involved with Camp Courageous, as a volunteer, since the beginning, as his dad, Bernard Kuriger and Uncle, Clarence Kuriger did the original plumbing, along with anything else that needed to be done during those earliest days. In addition, Jack grew up understanding the importance of Camp Courageous with a sister, Pat, who had Downs Syndrome.  The Kurigers worked closely with their dear friend, Clete Goedken, who was Camp´s Volunteer Maintenance person for the first 25+years.  Clete volunteered 7-days a week and his number one 'go to' person was Bernard Kuriger, who was a profession plumber by trade.  They also worked side by side with the Camp´s first director, Gary Turbes.  All four were the first to be inducted onto Camp´s Honorary Board along with Tait Cummins and Leo Greco.  Jack often was called on to help his Dad during those early years.  After school, Jack went away to serve our country in the Air Force and the National Guard.  When Jack returned to the area (Cascade) he right away embarked on keeping his family´s legacy alive by volunteering and attending almost all Camp Courageous events.   Jack had a wonderful personality, like the rest of the family, and was one of those who never met a stranger.  Jack was a wonderful son...and all those times with his dad, paid off in a lifetime of helping others with plumbing and electrical challenges. Jack´s many visits to Camp Courageous with donations and a sincere desire to help, will be dearly missed. Jack was preceded in death by his parents (Bernard & Minnis); his first wife, Rosemary Johnson; four sisters, Mary Ann (Frank) Miller Katherine Kuriger, Sheila Chambers and Pat Kuriger...each one, an incredible treasure...-Charlie Becker
