A Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church on Saturday, August 13 at 10 AM with Father Douglas Loecke presiding. Interment to follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Richard was born on November 5, 1935 in Newhall, IA growing up in Norway, IA. He was the son of the late Joseph and Elsie (Wickman) Alberts. Richard attended Norway High School. After high school, Richard enlisted into the US Marines Corp where he was stationed in Hawaii, Camp Lejeune, NC, and San Diego. On August 30, 1973, Richard married the love of his life, Karen Flannery in Cedar Rapids, IA. In the 1970’s Richard owned the Safari Lounge. For over 50 years, Richard was a Pipefitter belonging to the Pipefitters Union Local 125 and spent the majority of his time working for the Modern Piping company. Richard was a member of St. Matthew’s Parish in Cedar Rapids, IA where he served as a eucharist minister and was involved in eucharistic adoration, attending adoration weekly for over 15 years, and many other activities in the church. Richard was a loving husband, father, son, grandfather, brother, and friend. He enjoyed trap shooting, fishing, Hawkeye sports, playing cards, and watching and attending Chicago Cubs games. He enjoyed playing cards (euchre) and played weekly throughout his later years. He especially loved spending time with his kids and grandkids whether it was fishing, coaching, playing basketball, baseball, puzzles, or traveling. Those left to cherish Richard’s memory are his wife, Karen of Cedar Rapids, IA; his children, Lisa (Larry) Andersen of Cashton, Wisconsin, Kelly (Ann) Alberts of Carlsbad, California, Corey (Tracy) Alberts of Marion, IA, and Shawna (Kevin) Huls of Marion, IA; 17 grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandchild, Timothy Anderson, and two brothers, Eddie and Dean Alberts. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to a charity of one’s choice or especially close to his heart, Balance Autism. The family would like to thank the entire staff at the Crossing River Healthcare for all the love and support they showed Richard, while he was in their care.
