Russ and I spent most of the summer of 1980 working for his brother Randy and my cousin Roger Green, both of whom had a venture that consisted of running catfish lines. That was the summer of triple-digit temperaturs, shadflys, the River being shut down for a week or so because of a barge getting stuck in the channel due to drought-caused low water, and being seranaded by the Delta Queen's calliopi in the evenings as she herself was stuck in Savanna on her upriver voyage.
We would be up and on the water at dawn, bring the lines in, then to the the dock to reset the 100-hook lines into their holding trays. Then, in late afternoon, bait those hooks with clam and go back out to lay the lines from the bridge to just past Lainesville, getting back to the Sabula dock at 9pm or so, just to be up again at 5am.
For being 12 (and myself 13), we got to earn some pocket money, and learned the thrill of a niche of fishing. We also got respect by many adults - fisherman, barge workers, bartenders taking our hamberger orders) because here were these teenagers doing a job very few did.
Russ's death was a surprise to me, a stumbled upon item on the internet. I liked your dad/grandpa. Out of the four of us, only I survive to tell this story, and even then there's more to tell. He was a good kid and evidently grew into a good man.

I grew up around Russ and his son Nathan. My father, Wayne and I used to go sandbar camping on the Cedar with the two of them and had very fond memories. I also had the pleasure of working for Russ on his acreage in Ely. Mowing, trimming, cutting down trees and sharing cold beer when we were done. Russ was always a good man to me and he´ll be missed. Thinking of the entire family.
