Russell Giddings Obituary

Russell "Russ" Giddings, 56, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday, August 30, 2024, surrounded by his family. A visitation will be held from 9 - 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at Murdoch-Linwood Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Cedar Rapids. A funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. Russ was born on August 23, 1968, in Clinton, Iowa, and was proudly raised in Sabula, Iowa. He was the son of Beverly (Leonard) and Ronald Giddings, Sr. After graduating from East Central High School in Miles, Iowa, he honorably served in the Iowa Army National Guard. He married Becky Sue Hanson on April 12, 1997, and together they built a life filled with love and shared memories. Russ pursued a successful career as an industrial electrician at Quaker Oats Co. and was a member of Ely Lutheran Church. Russ was a passionate outdoorsman, taking part in hunting, fishing, and camping. He enjoyed his annual deer-hunting trip with his two good friends. Russ was known for his extraordinary kindness, generosity, and compassion. He radiated positivity and had a great sense of humor. Above all, Russ was a loving husband and a proud, devoted Papa who treasured every moment spent with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Becky Giddings of Cedar Rapids; children, Sam (Kevin) Kraft, Nathan Giddings, and Lauren (Andrew) Stallman, all of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Cloee Kraft, Joanna Kraft, and Hayes Kraft; father, Ronald Giddings, Sr.; siblings, Ron (Betty) Giddings, Jr., Becky (J.R.) Matous, and Sarah (Mark) Pease; and many nieces and nephews. Russ had a special place in his heart for his favorite cats, Taz and Tig, despite being a self-proclaimed reformed cat-hater. He was preceded in death by his mother, Beverly Giddings; brother, Randy Giddings; maternal grandparents, Russ and Vi Leonard; paternal grandparents, Bob and Irma Giddings; grandmother-in-law, Joan Johnson; and brother-in-law, Nick Hanson. Russ and I spent most of the summer of 1980 working for his brother Randy and my cousin Roger Green, both of whom had a venture that consisted of running catfish lines. That was the summer of triple-digit temperaturs, shadflys, the River being shut down for a week or so because of a barge getting stuck in the channel due to drought-caused low water, and being seranaded by the Delta Queen's calliopi in the evenings as she herself was stuck in Savanna on her upriver voyage.
We would be up and on the water at dawn, bring the lines in, then to the the dock to reset the 100-hook lines into their holding trays. Then, in late afternoon, bait those hooks with clam and go back out to lay the lines from the bridge to just past Lainesville, getting back to the Sabula dock at 9pm or so, just to be up again at 5am.
For being 12 (and myself 13), we got to earn some pocket money, and learned the thrill of a niche of fishing. We also got respect by many adults - fisherman, barge workers, bartenders taking our hamberger orders) because here were these teenagers doing a job very few did.
Russ's death was a surprise to me, a stumbled upon item on the internet. I liked your dad/grandpa. Out of the four of us, only I survive to tell this story, and even then there's more to tell. He was a good kid and evidently grew into a good man.

I grew up around Russ and his son Nathan. My father, Wayne and I used to go sandbar camping on the Cedar with the two of them and had very fond memories. I also had the pleasure of working for Russ on his acreage in Ely. Mowing, trimming, cutting down trees and sharing cold beer when we were done. Russ was always a good man to me and he´ll be missed. Thinking of the entire family.
