George W. Eaton

George W. Eaton, Lifelong resident of Joliet and Plainfield, passed away at Joliet Area Community Hospice Home, Sunday May 3, 2015. Age 96 years.

Survived by a son George E. (Doris) Eaton of Texas, a daughter Jill (Vernon) Krogh of North Aurora. Eight grandchildren Nick (Indria) Eaton, Angela (Paul) Sanchez, Aileen (Scott) Griffin, Karl Eaton, Kimberly White, Jennifer (Michael) Van Ommeren, G. Neal Krogh and Brynn Krogh. Thirteen great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Lucille Eaton (nee Copas) (1996), a daughter Gail Bogan Smith (2011), his sister Jean Deutser (2013) and his parents Roy and Glenn Eaton (nee Powers) .

George was born in Joliet and moved to Plainfield where he farmed for 30 years. He retired from Commonwealth Edison after 40 years of service as a Construction Supervisor and moved back to Joliet. Graduate of Joliet Township High School Class of 1937 where he was a major in the ROTC and awarded the Reserve Officers Training Award Sabre. Veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during W.W. II, George was awarded two bronze stars for the Battle of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. He was a Scout Master of the Boy Scouts of America and Explorer Scouts. Member of V.F.W. Cantigny Post #367. Lifetime member of Mattson Lodge #175 A.F. & A.M., Joliet Chapter #27, Royal Arch Masons Joliet Council #82, Royal and Selected Masters, Joliet Commandery #4 Knights Templer and Shriner-Medinah Temple. Member of the Old Timers Baseball Association, Senior Citizens Bowling League, Senior Service Center and Will County Farm Bureau. George served on the Board of Directors of the former Plainfield Savings and Loan, was a former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the First Church of Christ Scientist in Joliet where he also served as a Sunday School teacher, usher and Building Committee Supervisor. He enjoyed fishing and gardening and especially swimming at the Joliet YMCA on Hobolt Rd. and visiting with his many friends there. George was known as "a friend to many and a foe to none".

Funeral services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Road, Saturday, May 16 at 4:00 P.M. Memorials to the Shriner's Children's Hospital will be appreciated. Dear Family and friends of George I am so sorry that I am unable to be with you for the memorial service.
In the past year I have come to know George in a deeper way. We both attended bible study at Senior Star and yes indeed he was a wonderful person. I am sure the Lord greeted him with open arms.
