John J. Hines, Jr.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, John's greatest joy was his family. Hines (nee Knapper), who passed away in 2022, their daughter Deborah Umbaugh, passing in 2024, his brother and sister-in-law George and Jean Hines and his parents John J. Hines, Sr. and Catherine Hines (nee Cagle). Born on August 11, 1934 in Terre Haute, Indiana, John grew up with strong Midwestern values that shaped his life of service, hard work, and integrity. As a young man, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving aboard the U.S.S. Kearsarge during the Korean War. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline and patriotism that remained with him throughout his life. After his honorable service, John used the GI Bill to graduate from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, launching what would become an extraordinary professional career with Bridgestone/Firestone Tire Company. His dedication, leadership, and keen financial mind led him to the role of Vice President of Finances for the company's European Division. This position allowed him and Betty to live and travel across the globe, calling home such places as London, Mexico City, Lille, France, Madrid, Spain, Brussels, Belgium, and several cities throughout the United States. These years abroad created lasting friendships, broadened their world view, and deepened their appreciation for different cultures. John was a committed member of the Fire Safety Crew at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1960 – 1983 as well as a volunteer fireman when he resided in Ohio. When he retired, John's work did not stop. He dedicated his time and talents to causes and organizations that mattered to him. He volunteered with the American Red Cross as a Level 1 Disaster Relief worker, serving at 9/11 Ground Zero in the wake of the attacks. Locally, John served as Past President of the Will County Board of Health and was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he also served as Past President of the Lay Ministry. John was deeply proud of his Masonic membership, as a 32° Master Mason of Terre Haute Lodge #86 F & A.M. and a member of the Valley of Terre Haute Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite since 1957. Those who knew John will remember him as a man of great integrity, sharp wit, and unwavering loyalty. He had a gift for connecting with people from all walks of life, whether in a boardroom overseas or at home. John believed in giving back to the people and his community, and his life's work was a testament to that belief.
