John Merritt 'Scotty' Scott

Age 94, of Custer Park, IL, Having told enough stories for two lifetimes and suffering unbearable loneliness since the loss of his Annie last October, Scotty drifted off peacefully March 12, 2025, surrounded by family & made comfortable by the caring staff at Uplifted Care. Born February 27, 1931, in Rock Island, IL to the late John Merritt Scott, Sr. and Mona (nee Ennis) Scott.
John married Anita Marie Gutierrez on June 22, 1974, at Richard Street Methodist Church in Joliet, IL.
Scotty's career path had several stops, but he spoke most fondly of his time in the US Air Force and as owner of Scotty's Tap at the corner of Washington & Iowa streets in Joliet. Always an athlete, Scotty was captain of his high school track team. Later in life he returned to track and field as a Master competitor, setting a pentathlon world record in 1981 at age 50. His basketball skills were put to work in the US Air Force where his team representing the 655th AC&W won numerous titles. In an exhibition game with the then NBA Syracuse Nationals, Scotty was high scorer with 18 of his team's 43 points. In retirement Scotty & Annie spent 20-plus years living in Fort Myers, FL, where they enjoyed staying fit, making friends, welcoming visitors & an occasional cocktail.
Surviving are his children, Linda (Lee) Capista of Shorewood, Steve (Bev) Scott of Wilmington, David (Nicky) Scott of Waterlooville, England, and Tony (Mindy) Scott of Custer Park; stepchildren, Deborah (Glen) Johnson of Joliet, Michael (Kathy) Bravo of Lockport, and Joseph (Paula) Bravo of Shorewood; 17 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Anita; sister, Marilyn Lehan; daughter, Laura Lee and infant son, Kevin Michael.
Committal service with military honors to be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, April 25, 2025, at 9:30am. Guests should arrive at the Welcome Center for staging no later than 9:15am.
