Joseph Shetina Obituary

Joseph R. Shetina
Born: October 29, 1937 in Rockdale, IL
Died: April 18, 2022 in Joliet, IL
It is with great sadness that the Shetina family announce the peaceful passing of Joe Shetina, Monday, April 18, 2022 at his home in Joliet, Illinois. Joe was born Joseph Robert Shetina on October 29, 1937 in Rockdale, Illinois and was a son of Edward and Jennie (Troha) Shetina.
Joe was a graduate with the class of 1955 from Joliet Township High School and later attended Lewis College and Northern Illinois University. He was a well-known real estate appraiser, but perhaps best known as a Joliet City Councilman, serving District #1 for 36 years from 1975 to 2011. He also served earlier on the Will County Board.
Humor was one of Joe's greatest gifts. He could be found daily at the round table at Earl's solving the world's problems with friends, Bob Hacker, Gene and Joe Burla, Ed Akeman, John Leach, Perry Rudman, Paul Gantzert, and adding the Saturday guy, Henry Berry. Occasional drop-ins were always welcome along with the memories of those that had left their places but were not lost, Ed Czerkies, Earl D' Amico, Jack Weber and Bob Kiep. When Earl's closed, the round table moved to Thayer's to continue the tradition. The fun continued with the poker guys, Ralph Sherman, Jim Brady, Pete Nichols and others who always shared great times together.
Joe is survived by his loving wife: Susan (nee' Moore); children: Mark (Julie Lynch) Shetina, Douglas (Donna Etheridge) Shetina and Dana Shetina; grandchildren: Mandy, Michael, Joe, Sarah, Samantha and Taylor; sister: Jean Pellegrini, and numerous great-grandchildren, as well as nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Jennie; brothers: Richard, Edward, and William, and former sister-in-law: JoAnn Bozich Shetina Hamner.
The family will receive relatives and friends for a visitation on Friday, April 22, 2022 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road in Joliet.
A celebration of Joe's life will continue on Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Tezak Funeral Home with a short visitation from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow and Joe will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Memorial Park II – Hills of Rest in Joliet.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Mike Turk for his friendship to Joe and his assistance during Joe's final years.

I thank this reminder of Joe's passing. It helps bring good memories forward. The few of us still living from our class of '55 are grateful to be able to reflect upon our younger days & the ones we enjoyed. Younger ones may have that privilege some day. It's very nice for families of the deceased to know the life of their loved one also lives on in others. Jacque Bourrie, now living in Scottsdale, AZ for 57 years. Thank you to Legacy for reminding us of the anniversary of Joe's passing. Remembering such a special person on this St Valentines Day seems appropriate.

I rode the Joliet bus to JT each morning along w/those from Rockdale. It was getting full by my stop At Morgan & Willow.
At our 2015 reunion Joe helped me get to visit the Rialto Theatre he worked so hard to rehab. Tho' I left Joliet many years ago, it still holds a warm place in my heart because of the many people I was able to know. You were a blessing, Joe, keep up your thoughtfulness for us not yet there. jac

Joe was a great man. He always had time to say hello, meet with his constituents. What many people don't know is how active he was behind the scenes. As a news reporter covering the courthouse, I often found Joe sitting in a courtroom following the goings on in Will County government while he was a councilman. Always a joy, always an inspiration. I now live in Austin, Texas, so I'll be unable to attend the visitation, but Joe will be in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy send off to heaven.
