Richard Tyler Obituary

Richard Duane Tyler
Born: June 13, 1924 in Reddick, IL
Died: August 15, 2025 in Fernley, NV
Richard "Dick" D. Tyler
Dick was born to James and Myrtle (nee Guest) Tyler. In 1927 his family moved to Elwood, IL where he spent most of his life. He graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1942. He served three years in the U.S. Navy throughout the South Pacific in WWII. When he returned from service, he married Dorothy Nielsen in 1946. They were married for 74 years.
He along with his brothers, James and Tom, owned and operated the grain elevator, James Tyler and Sons in Elwood, that their father had started. His sons, Dick and Tad later joined the company. He enjoyed the many friendships he made while in business.
When Dick retired from the grain business, he got his real estate and auctioneer's licenses and formed Tyler Realty which he ran for many years. Later, he and Dorothy moved to Geneseo, IL and he continued his real estate business there along with his daughter, Laurie. Dick and Dorothy moved again when they were 90 to Nevada.
Dick was a masonic member and received a special recognition of his 50-year membership. He was involved in many groups during his years in Elwood. He was most recently a member of Covenant Presbyterian in Reno, NV.
He loved to tell jokes, play instruments and sing. He led the Monday sing-a-longs at Salem Lutheran Home in Joliet for many years. He also entertained at many nursing homes, senior citizens' centers, veterans' homes and churches over the years.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, James and Myrtle Tyler; his wife, Dorothy (nee Nielsen); half-sisters, Marvella Patchett and Dorothy Cook; sister, Phyllis Leupold; brothers and sisters-in-law, James (Marilyn) Tyler and Thomas (Carol) Tyler.
He is survived by his four children: Richard (Marylynn) Tyler, Lynn Johnson, Laurie (Vince) Menozi, and Tad (Annette) Tyler. His eight grandchildren: Robyn Tyler, Chris (Felicia) Tyler, Amy (Brandon) Caldwell, Neil Johnson, Nicholas Menozi, Douglas (Amanda) Menozi, Matthew (Allison) Tyler and Madelyn Tyler. He is also survived by fourteen great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date for both Dick and Dorothy as per their wishes.
If you wish, memorials can be made in his name to either Maple Hill Cemetery Association at PO Box 127, Elwood, IL 60421 or to Children's Garden at 801 N. Chicago, St., Elwood, IL 60421.

Yesterday

I remember your dad always smiling and joking with us when we were teenagers in the 1960´s.
One afternoon Lynn and I were watching a scary movie on TV and her dad popped in the room and said "Boo!" I jumped and bumped my head on the wall and her dad felt so bad about that happening. But everything was OK and we all just laughed. Good memories!
