Wesley L. Helm Jr., age 72, passed away peacefully on December 14, 2020.
He was born on October 21, 1948, to the late Wesley (Buster) L. Helm, Sr. and Evelyn (Lean) Helm in Joliet, IL. Wesley was the second oldest of six children.
Wesley attended Joliet Central High School, and Joliet Junior College. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving two tours in Vietnam and served our country for a total of 3 years before being wounded and honorably discharged. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Medal, Aircraft Crewman Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He later transitioned into the trucking industry and drove trucks for 35 years.
He accepted Christ at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, under the late Pastor Isaac Singleton. He sang in the choir, was an usher and drove the church van. He later attended New Testament Fellowship Church, under the leadership of Pastor James Starks, Jr.
Wesley was preceded in death by his parents and his two brothers, James Helm, and Freddie Helm.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Deloris Helm; daughter, Audrey Weaver, brother, Lonnie Helm; sisters, Jeannette (Larry) Stevens, and Jeannelle (Lee) Smith. He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary (John-DE) Wesley, in-laws, Tina Allen, Jacqueline (Anthony-DE) Humber, Mary Redmond, John (Raychel) Wesley, Diane (James) Starks, Florence Ransom, and Jessie (Sandra) Wesley. Also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
A celebration of Wesley's life will be held on Monday, December 21, 2020, with a visitation at St. John Baptist Church, 104 E Zarley Blvd., Joliet, IL from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Service 10:30 a.m., Pastor James Starks, Jr. officiating. Interment immediately following the service at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL where he will receive full military honors. Due to restrictions imposed by the cemetery, the burial service will be private.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, maximum occupancy at the church will be 50 guests. Face masks are required upon entry.

He learned to fly unofficially.

To everything, there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven. A time to be born, and a time to die, a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted. It was his season, it was his time. Be reminded that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. May the Lord bless and strengthen you and the entire family at this time. We are praying for all of you.

Dear Delores & family - please know my heart goes out to you at this time, and I´m praying peace for all his friends and family touched by this great loss -
Wesley was a one-of-kind man - he made a great impact on my life and our business in the early years - He was one of the first truck drivers we contracted to haul our steel loads in the Chicagoland area - it took very few loads for us to decide to work almost exclusively with him. I wish someone had videos of us working together to get the hauls unloaded on those cold Chicago wintery days & nights in those warehouses - Me on a forklift - and Wes, `wisdom walking´ guiding me on.
I looked forward to when we could share a lunch & we´d sit and I could listen to his interesting stories and pointers he shared! I was so grateful to him for the respect he showed me, in an industry where that wasn´t always the case.
- It was a blessing to have met him!
