Alma Dawn was born Nov. 13, 1931, at Loup City to Harold and Ruth (Williams) Owens. She was raised on a farm near Loup City where she and her siblings would ride horses or a team of horses with a buggy to school. Alma graduated from Ord High School in 1950, then took Normal Training and taught school until January 1953.
On Jan. 4, 1953, Alma was united in marriage to Richard Joe Hruza at Ord. To this union four children were born: Linda, Richard Jr., Albert and Marjorie. The family lived on a farm in Garfield County.
Alma enjoyed the farm life, gardening, canning, and raising and dressing chickens. While the kids were growing up she attended all of their activities and many of her girls' softball games at the "Sand Flats."
Alma and Richard were instrumental in starting BINGO at the Ord Veterans Club. Following Richard's death in 1985, Alma moved into Ord and began working at the Ord High School cafeteria.
Alma continued to play BINGO and pickle and scratch tickets with her friends. She also enjoyed traveling to Pickstown, S.D., and going along with her son Richard "Dick" to visit his buddies across the United States.
Alma was an avid Husker fan and enjoyed other sports, especially when her kids and grandkids participated in sports and activities. She loved polka music and dancing with her friend Elmer Kroeger. They attended many polka dances in Nebraska, Kansas and Minnesota. In the recent years, Alma quilted and made many keepsakes quilts for grandkids and great-grandkids. She also enjoyed going to the grandkid's and great-grandkid's activities and all of their visits.
Alma will be remembered as good cook and baker. Her specialty was cinnamon rolls, buns and pies. She made a true art of "jelly making" for family and friends.
Alma had a great attitude; following her diagnosis with cancer her quote was, "whatever will be, will be." She will be loved and missed by many.
Survivors include a son, Richard Joe "Dick" Hruza Jr. of Wright, Wyo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Leonard Fischer of Summertown, Tenn., and Marjorie and Bill McFarland of Grand Island; four grandchildren, Danny and Leann Davenport, Denise and Mark Wray, Hank McFarland and friend, Megan Griffith and Kenny McFarland and fiancée, Emily Kerl; four great-grandchildren, Shannon Davenport and friend, Kris Turk, Reese Davenport; and Danielle and Makayla Wray; a sister, Ruthe Suminki of Ord; a brother, Harlon Owens of Billings, Mont; and her friend, Elmer Kroeger of Ord.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruth Greenland and Harold Owens; her husband, Richard Joe Hruza Sr. in 1985; her son, Albert Alan Hruza in 2017; and two brothers and three sisters-in-law, Harold and Mary Owens, Roger and Julie Owens and Dorothy Owens.

I always loved going to the farm when we were kids. Aunt Alma Dawn made the best corn cob jelly and apricot kolaches. And remembering her and Uncle Richard polka at the Saturday night dances always brings a smile. I bet they are doing that right now - or playing Bingo!
