Dale Crandell Obituary

Dale ""Red"" R. Crandell, 86, of Grand Island, passed away Friday, Nov. 18, 2022, surrounded by his loving family.
A Celebration of Life service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 28, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Kelly Karges and Anny Kapundu will officiate. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29 at the cemetery in Blair.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27, at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Dale was born on Jan. 21, 1936, in Kimball County to Joseph and Eda (Kilburn) Crandell. He graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1952. In 1958, Dale entered the United States Marine Corps, proudly serving until 1964.
On Nov. 23, 1960, Dale was united in marriage to Gay Lee Petersen; the couple moved from Oceanside, Calif., to Washington D.C., where Dale started his career working for IBM. While working for IBM, he supported many government offices, including the Library of Congress, the Pentagon, and the White House.
The couple was blessed with the arrival of two children while in Washington, D.C. From there, the couple moved to Storm Lake, Iowa, Omaha, and finally to Grand Island in 1983. Dale retired from IBM in 1992.
Dale was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and spending time in nature, including hunting, fishing, and gardening. Dale spent much of his spare time volunteering at many organizations, including the Nebraska State Fair, the Central Nebraska Crane Trust, Trinity Methodist Men's group, pancake feeds, soup supers, and more. His greatest love was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gay; his children and their spouses, Diana and Dean Hast of Grand Island and William ""Todd"" and Peggy Crandell of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Sara, Scott, Amanda and Audrey; five great-grandchildren; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Leonard and Susan Crandell of Rapid City, S.D., and Robert and Hazel Crandell of Juniata; and a sister, Alvena Hughs of Gering.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Eda Crandell; father and mother-in-law, Walter and Golda Petersen; four brother and three sisters-in-law, Donald, Willard and Joan, Edward and Rhetta, and Schuylar and Peggy; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Madge and Bill Smith, and Jody and Aug Stricker; and a grandson, Will Crandell.
The family suggests memorials to the Parkinson's Foundation, www.parkinson.org; or National Alliance on Mental Illness (honoring his grandson Will). https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/namiminnesota

Dale was my supervisor at a job early in my career. My first week on the job I literally blew up a computer monitor that I was working on and was sure I would be fired. Dale poked his head out of the office at the noise and asked if I was OK. He calmly told me to order a new unit and get back to work. He did give me the nickname "Sparky" but never mentioned the incident again. Dale was very knowledgeable about his job but had a wonderful balance of kindness and firmness that made you want to be a better employee and person. He was the best example of a boss I have ever had the privilege of working for. Years after I worked with him, he and Gay continued to be involved in our lives as friends. You will be missed! God bless your family as you deal with his loss.
