Daniel Miner Obituary

Daniel Iandoli Miner

August 18, 1993 - July 16, 2021

Daniel Iandoli Miner will be remembered as a quick-witted, loquacious, and soulful young man intent on making the World a better place. He passed away unexpectedly of complications of cardiovascular disease in Flagstaff, Arizona. Daniel is greatly missed and forever loved.

Daniel was born in Anchorage, Alaska and was raised in Ithaca, NY. He graduated from SUNY Plattsburgh with a degree in psychology. Danny launched his career in human services providing wilderness therapy for at-risk youth, and later came to work in substance abuse counseling for adults. He pursued these difficult jobs in beautiful places, working for organizations ranging from Florida to Hawaii to New York to Arizona. He was not naive in overestimating the impact his work would make; he saw the uphill battle that faced many of those he served. But his realism did not temper his empathy or enthusiasm to strive for the best possible outcomes. He truly respected and cared for those most marginalized and disdained by society, and he worked hard to change this status quo.

Daniel loved travel, the natural world, music and guitar, outdoor adventure, and whenever family and food came together. He worked on trail crews for AmeriCorp/ACE program in the Southwest, hiked, canoed, and kayaked across North America, and adventured in South and Central America. He made lifelong friends throughout these endeavours with his disarming sense of humor. He stuck a balance between welcoming and teasing, optimism and cynicism.

Danny's passion came out in his storytelling and his progressive take on politics. He made us laugh and he made us think. He was an avid reader of everything ranging from serious fiction to biographies to current events. And he loved to share what he learned and what he was thinking. There was never a shortage of conversation topics or well-informed opinions when interacting with Danny. He was brave enough to grapple with uncomfortable societal questions, leading him to an impressive understanding of history, civil rights, politics, and culture. Rich discussions with Danny echo in the hearts and minds of us all.

Daniel is survived by his parents, Mary Iandoli and Todd Miner, his sister Elizabeth Iandoli Miner, his grandmother, Louise Belden Miner, and numerous loving aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. He is predeceased by his Uncle Eddie and Auntie Liz, his Nonna and Pappa, Bette and Charlie Iandoli, and his Grandpa, Rick Miner.

We will miss Danny bursting into rooms or into song with unabashed silliness. We will miss his long winded stories and sharp rebukes of the political status quo. And we will miss him telling Alexa to play his latest favorite song and strutting across the kitchen with moves to make us all laugh. We will miss our beloved son, brother, family member, and friend who gave us so much.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, the 11th of September, 2021 in Ithaca, NY at Upper Treman State Park. All are welcome. For details please see danieliandoliminer.com. Friends and family are encouraged to honor Daniel with a contribution to Danny's Trail, a new hiking trail with the Finger Lakes Land Trust (fllt.org/donate).

I got the pleasure of working with Dan the last few months, even sat next to him in the office. What a bright light he was, such a good, caring person. I am so sorry for his family's loss, but glad to know he is well loved.
