Dean Linscott Obituary

Linscott, Dean Leroy

Dean Leroy Linscott, 82, of Ithaca, NY passed peacefully on July 19, 2014. Dean was born in Blue Springs, NE to John and Ruth Linscott. He began his academic career in a one room country school house in Gage County, NE. He graduated from Beatrice High School in 1949 and was inducted into the Beatrice High School Hall of Fame in 2001 in recognition of his distinguished career in agricultural research. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1953 and his PhD in Agronomy in 1961 from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Dr. Linscott then came to Ithaca where he worked as a research agronomist with the USDA at Cornell University until his retirement in 1992. Brigadier General Dean Linscott also served in the U.S. Army from 1953-1987. He retired as the Commanding General of the 98th Training Division. His decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Distinguished Service Medal. He was also awarded the Order of the Tomahawk, the 98th Training Division's highest honor. Dean married Cecelia Pinkerton Linscott in 1953 and attributed much of his success in life to the talents and dedication of his loving wife. During his 53 years in Ithaca he and Cecelia raised seven children. Dean was a Boy Scout leader. He shared his considerable baseball talent with Ithaca youth as a Kiwanis baseball and Cinderella softball coach. He was an avid New York Yankee fan and after retirement, could often be found bass fishing on Cayuga Lake. Dean is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alma Cecelia Linscott; and his seven children, John Linscott of Rouses Point, NY, David Linscott (Christina Linscott) of Katy, TX, Cheryl Linscott (Bob Franciscovich) of Frederick, MD, Dean Linscott (Melanie Linscott) of Endicott, NY, Sr. Mary Alma Linscott of Lincoln, NE, Jean Linscott (Ken Ruoff) of Portland, OR, and Mara Linscott (Ed Powers) of Kingston, MA. He was a beloved grandfather to 13 grandchildren and brother to Junelaine (Larry Arnold) and John (Mary Anne) Linscott. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday July 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church 302 St. Catherine Circle. Burial with military honors will follow at the Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, July 23 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bangs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers please send donations to Immaculate Conception School 320 West Buffalo St. Ithaca, NY 14850. Dean was a staunch supporter of education and all seven of his children graduated from this school.
