James Erickson Obituary

Erickson, James Paul

Rochester, NY. 1944-2017. Passed away peacefully with his beloved wife, Suzanne, at his bedside, on July 4, 2017.

Jim was born in Ithaca, NY on June 18, 1944. He was the son of William and Mary Margaret (Manion) Erickson. He was an honor graduate of Ithaca College, an inductee in Nazareth Colleges' Sports Hall of Fame, an avid fan of the Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates, loved photography, and chased trains with his camera for the perfect picture many, many, times.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Suzanne Erickson; brother-in-law, Robert (Kathy) Hartung of Fort Lauderdale, FL; sister-in-law, Jean (Stuart) Hartung McAlpine of Agnes Water, Australia; special nieces, nephews, friends and his ever attentive dog, Ladybug.

Jim and Suzanne met at a gathering held by Jim's brother-in-law and friend, Robert Hartung. Suzanne decided very quickly that Jim was the partner she had been looking for and Jim agreed as they remained deeply loving co-partners for over 39 years.

Family and Friends are invited to remember Jim's life at a Funeral Service on Friday, July 21 at 1 PM at Anthony Funeral Chapel, 2305 Monroe Ave., Rochester, NY. Jim will be interred later in the year at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC as he was a soldier in Danang, Vietnam and affected by Agent Orange, becoming over 90% disabled later in his life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777 or online at www.michaeljfox.org. To share a memory of Jim or send a condolence to the family visit www.anthonychapels.com.

I met Jim when I was a sports writer, and as Ithaca's SID he arranged for us to have lunch with football coach Jim Butterfield in the tower restaurant looking out over the lake. It was a spectacular day, and the beginning of a spectacular friendship. I got to know him better when we worked together at Nazareth. There he was always looking out for students and their welfare in a way that few if any others did. He called everyone Big Guy, but what I remember most is his big heart.

Sincerest condolences to all on Jim's passing. He was one of the finest people I've ever known with an innate ability to make those around him feel better. He was a true all-star. Rest in peace, Jim.

Though I had not been really in touch with Jim since high school we shared plenty of good times. We did a radio sports show on WHCU together and ran track together. His dad was one of my engineering professors at Cornell.
As a member of the IHS class of 1962 reunion committee please accept our class' sincere condolences.

So sorry to learn of Jim's passing and his struggle with health issues. When he worked at Nazareth, he was a joy to be with: witty, smart, a great writer, and a solid member of the Naz community. I join your family in celebrating his life and remembering the ongoing sacrifices he made for our country.
