Marsha Savage Obituary

Marsha Kent Savage

Marsha Kent Savage age 60, died November 1, 2012 at her home in Knoxville, TN after an extended illness. She was born in Union City, TN, the daughter of Tom Kent Savage and Mary Emma Harder Savage, who preceded her in death.

She attended Clarksville public schools and received a B.A and M.A. in English from Austin Peay State University, having done research on Lord Byron. She earned a Ph.D. in English at the University of Florida, where her research connected the works of Archibald Alison to William Wordsworth. She taught at the University of Florida and later Stetson University, where she developed a literature course titled "The Crazy Woman in the Attic," showing her lighter side. Marsha served as a technical editor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory for almost 24 years before going on disability leave in 2011. Marsha was smart, reliable, and meticulous—traits which made her a valued employee. She was also very helpful and funny, with a quick, dry wit, which made her a treasured co-worker and friend. Marsha enjoyed being an aunt, reading, and maintaining the best 60-year-old facial skin ever. She had a special fascination with the Nancy Drew mysteries, continuing to enjoy her mother's 1930's original books.

Marsha is survived by four sisters and their husbands: Kathy and Bob Gant, Knoxville; Susan Savage and Stephen Mallett, Nashville; Bonnie Savage and Tom Mylott, Dallas, TX; and Rosemary and Juaquin Lee Walling, Juneau, AK. She is also survived by an aunt, Martha Harder, Blacksburg, VA; nieces Anna Stewart, Emma Gant, Lucy Mallett, and Julia Brown; nephew Thomas Mylott; and three great-nieces.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In appreciation for Marsha's care at DaVita Knoxville Central, memorial gifts to the National Kidney Foundation may be mailed to DaVita Knoxville Central, 9141 Cross Park Dr., Ste. 102, Knoxville, TN 37923. Susan and family, I don't know that you would remember me, but I remember your name most because your dad used to talk about you so much at church. He was such a sweet man. He used to sit in front of our family every Sunday. Sometimes I would sit with him. Prayers to you and your family in the loss of your sister. God Bless. Beth (Van Beber) Fowler

My deepest condolences to the Savage family. I had the distinct pleasure of working with Marsha at ORNL. Marsha served as Technical Editor to the group I was in and she was always so very helpful and kind. I hope that knowing she was so well loved and respected will lessen the pain of losing her. God bless you all.

Dear Kathy, Susan & Tom,

At times like this, it is difficult to give thanks for the incredible gift our Lord has given to our loved one, because that gift has taken the loved one out of our lives for a time. Wanda and I will pray that God will hold you close and comfort you until the pain of parting has subsided, and all that is left is the joy of having had such a wonderful person as Marsha in your lives.

I was saddened to read of Marsha's illness and passing. We were classmates and I remember that she was selected "Most Studious" our senior year at CHS. My sympathy to the Savage family. Marsha was friendly, smart, and will be missed.

November 3, 2012

To the Savage Family:
You have my sympathies on the passing of Marsha. I remember her at Austin Peay as a quiet and shy person. However, when you got to know her she was quite the witty and friendly person. I have some good memories at the Savage home when Mike dated Susan. You are all in our prayers as you grieve a wonderful person. I know that she will be missed.
