Polk Community CollegeLAKE WALES -- Mr. Albert Kirkland of Lake Wales died of heart failure Nov. 17, 2005, at home. He was 66.Born in Pompano Beach on Oct. 13, 1939, he came to Lake Wales from Fort Pierce 40 years ago. He was a retired professor of political science at Polk Community College. He was a former teacher at Roosevelt High School, Oakland High School and Haines City High School. He graduated from Florida A & M and Florida State University. He was former mayor and city commissioner for the city of Lake Wales. He was a former board member of the Lake Wales Charter School system. He was a former member of the Lake Wales Rotary Club and a lifemember of the Lake Wales Branch NAACP. He was a member of Mount Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a member of the trustee board, and past youth department assistant.Mr. Kirkland is survived by his wife, Marion Kirkland; daughter, Bridget O'Neal, Atlanta; sons, Albert Kirkland Jr., Winter Haven, Wayne Warmack, Miami, Anthony Kirkland, Winter Haven; mother, Mary Glover, Lake Wales; sisters, Marilyn Highes, Ocala, Carolyn Whitehurst, Gainesville, Jacquelyn Cherry, Macon, Ga., Masie Greenleaf, Ocala, Johnnie Mae McBride, Deerfield Beach, Naomi Williams, Jacksonville; brothers, Anthony Kirkland, and Emory Kirkland, both of St. Louis; eight grandchildren.Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Mount Zion Progressive Missionary Baptist Church, 12 B St. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Albert Kirkland Sr. Gymnasium, 409 N. Third St., Lake Wales. Burial will be in Lake Wales Cemetery. Alexander Funeral Home, Lake Wales.
