GARRETT, 71

AUBURNDALE - Mr. J.D. Garrett passed away Dec. 22, 2008, due to heart failure.
He was born August 19, 1937 in Sacramento, KY to Arley and Beulah Garrett. He moved to Holland, MI in 1955 where he met his wife of 51 years, Janice (Roskamp). They later moved to Traverse City, MI and bought a restaurant, party store, truck stop (Yankee Boy) which they owned for almost 25 years. He later worked at Mitchell Golf Course. They both retired in 2002 and moved to The Hamptons in Auburndale, FL.
He sponsored and managed the Yankee Boy Softball team for many years. It was one of the top slow-pitch teams in Northern Michigan. Many life long friendships were to come from his participation in the sport he loved so much.
His favorite passions were baseball, softball, fishing, and playing cards.
He is survived by his wife, two sons, Randy (Melissa) Garrett and Roger (Terry) Garrett. Also grandchildren: Joshua (Shantel) Garrett; Ashley Kiel; Allison Garrett; Chad Garrett and Madyson Garrett. Also step grandson Colin Tulloch; great grandson, Zander Garrett and step great granddaughter Kyleigh Bunker. Also a sister, Myrtie (Hershel) Kimmel of Sacramento, KY. He was preceded in death by his parents and two granddaughters, Heather and Kortni Garrett.
Cremation has taken place by Mid. Florida Cremation Service. There will be a Remembrance of Life in Michigan in the spring, which will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations in J D's name to SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) or the Good Shepherd Hospice, 105 Arneson Ave., Auburndale, FL 33823.

Jan,
I am so sorry to hear of JD's passing, he was like a second father to me. I have fond memories of my six years working for the two of you at Yankee Boy. You both taught me so much about hard work, but most of all to have a lot of fun and enjoy what you do. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. I think of you often.

Jan, Randy and all of J.D.'s family. I will forever be grateful for the friendship and good times I had working for the Garrett's at Yankee Boy. Those were some of the most fun times I've ever had at any job. He will be missed by all of us who knew him so well. Hi Jan and family....So sorry about J.D. and was so glad to hear from you when Ken passed away. We made it through Christmas and I am going to Delaware with my son, his wife and five month old baby and will be staying for two weeks. Will help get through the winter.
