James Chauncey Obituary

James "Claude" Chauncey

James "Claude" Chauncey, 83, of Bartow, passed away on August 12, 2021, at Winter Haven Hospital, after a decade long battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Claude was born in Mayo, Fl., on May 6, 1938, to Hancil Milton & Essie Mae (Perry) Chauncey and was educated within the Lafayette County Public Schools. Claude moved to Bartow in 1956, where he met his future wife Barbara C. Harrison of Lake Garfield-Bartow. Claude was a retired Residential Contractor, who owned and operated Chauncey Builders, Chauncey Pool's and Bartow Pool & Patio Store. Later, Claude worked for the Polk County Board of County Commissioner's as a Building Inspector, until his retirement. After retirement, Claude used his building talents, to build and construct his and Barbara's beautiful two-story mountain home in Western North Carolina, where he spent much of his time welcoming family and friends. Claude is survived, by his wife Barbara of 60 years, children - Jeffrey (Marcia), Rodney (Trish) and Lori (Michael), Grandchildren - Ryan, Joshua, Zachary, Samuel, Ciara & Morgan, Great-Grandchildren - Hunter, Peyton & Aniyah, Brothers - Milton, Sam, & Jerry and Sisters - Patricia Hingson, Janelle Starling & Mary Rose Fike. In addition to his parents, Claude was preceded in death by brothers - John, George, Wayne, Harry, & Willie. The Family would like to offer their heartfelt thanks and gratitude, to Dr. Jose Martinez-Salas and his personal Medical Staff (Lisa & Sandra) at Gessler Clinic, for Claude's many years of superb and compassionate medical care, even at the very end of his life. Thank You! Also, the Family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Winter Haven Hospital - Street 2, for their care and compassion, for Claude, and allowing his wife, Barbara, to stay with him until the end. Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, August 18, 2021, at 1000 a.m. at Wildwood Cemetery in Bartow. In lieu of flowers, the Family requested donations be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org. Arrangements entrusted to Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow and condolences can be sent to Claude's family via their website, www.whiddenmcleanfuneralhome.com

Barbara, It has been many years since I have seen you, but I wanted to offer my condolences on the death of your husband. I remember thinking that you were so lucky to be blessed with the love of a good man. I am sure you will miss him but he will be waiting for you on the other side.

I had the great pleasure of working with Claude in the County. He was a good man. He and Barbara were quite entertaining. Good people.
