BILL MEYERS Obituary

BILL MEYERS Bill Meyers, 95, adored father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, November 16, 2013. He was born in Illinois and was the only child of Edward and Jessie Meyers. Bill was united in marriage to Dorothy in 1940, and they had two daughters and a son. After Dorothy passed away in 1983, Bill was lucky in love for the second time when he married Sara Della Croce. Bill was happy to add her three children to his family, too. Bill was a man of great devotion and shared 70 wonderful years of marriage with these two special women. His goal was to see his wife, Sara, precede him in death, as he did not want to leave her alone. True to form, he succeeded in this, joining her exactly one month to the day after her death. He was also preceded in death by his son, who was stillborn, and his stepson Anthony F. Della Croce, Jr. Bill was a constant source of entertainment and left his family with countless stories to share. He believed in accentuating the positive. Bill was a salesman at heart. After moving to McAllen in 1947, he was a beer distributor, owned a finance company, and sold insurance. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church for 61 years and served on the vestry multiple times. He led the vestry as both junior and senior warden and served on the Bishop's Committee. He was a 60-year member of the American Legion, a lifetime member of the Texas Lions Camp after serving as a former director of the Lions Camp and a proud member of the McAllen Noon Lions Club. Bill was civic-minded and loved McAllen. He was named McAllen Man of the Year in 1980. This accolade was well-deserved, as he volunteered countless hours for the Planning and Zoning Board, Foreign Trade Zone, McAllen Public Utilities Board and many other city committees. He also served on the board of the Salvation Army. Bill is survived by his daughters, Pam O'Conner of Austin and Patty Polk of San Marcos, his stepson, Gary (Ann) Della Croce of McAllen, and his stepdaughter, Mary Lou (Bruce) Fehr of Houston. He is also survived by his grandchildren Sharon (Rick) Flores of McAllen; Joe Nanus of Austin; Bobby (Leslie) Burgess of San Marcos; Patty (Kelly) Ireland of New York City; Michelle (Jim) Spence of McAllen; Lori Della Croce of Austin; Gary Della Croce of Austin; Rachel (Evan) Vangsnes of Round Rock; Gwyn Della Croce of McAllen; Anthony Fehr of Houston; Sarah-Anne Fehr of Houston; Michael Della Croce of Spring; and numerous great grandchildren. Bill's pallbearers will be Joe Nanus, Bobby Burgess, Rick Flores, Gary Della Croce, Jr., Anthony Fehr, and Ron Cappon. Honorary pallbearers are Jay Fields, Tim Campbell, and McAllen Noon Lions Club members. The family extends our love and gratitude to Bill's special caregivers. They each held a special place in his heart and will forever live in ours. Funeral Services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, November 23, 2013 at St. John's Episcopal Church. Burial will follow at Valley Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Bill Meyers was our patient and friend for over 20 years. He, and often Sara, would come in for regular visits several times a year. He always had a smile on his face and a joke to tell. He was very kind and involved in the community. Both he and Sara will be missed, but not forgotten. We were glad to hear that he passed away peacefully and want to express Our sincere condolences to Bill and Sara's families.

Sweet Mr. Meyers,
It saddens me deeply that you are no longer with us. This past Friday I found myself driving your way...at our usual hour. I guess my heart refuses to accept you are gone. You grew on me rather quickly...becoming my favorite patient. I looked forward to Friday afternoon bc I knew that my working day would end with you smiling at me. RIP my sweet sweet man.
