Dallas Dalton Obituary

New York - In loving memory of Dallas Henry Dalton, Jr. of McAllen TX, who peacefully passed away on December 31, 2023 in New York City. Born on August 28, 1930 in Arkadelphia, Arkansas to Dallas Henry Dalton and Verna June Clark, he led a remarkable life dedicated to the practice of medicine and his passion for the outdoors.

Dallas was an avid sportsman who cherished the pursuits of hunting and fishing and maintained a lifelong love-hate relationship with the game of golf. He also loved cooking gourmet cuisine and relished telling a good joke - the more ribald, the better! A proud alumnus of the University of Arkansas, he was a gifted athlete who played football and ran track and field for the Razorbacks. He was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. Graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1951 at the age of 20, he continued his educational journey, earning his medical doctor degree at 25 from the University of Arkansas Medical School.

He completed his internship at Crawford E. Long Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. In 1957 he achieved the rank of captain in the US Army Medical Corps. While deployed overseas in Asia, Dallas met the love of his life, Anita Marie Linney. A beautiful young woman from a pioneering Texas family, Anita was also in the army working as a nurse. After a whirlwind romance that took them around the Far East, they were married at Camp Zama outside of Tokyo, Japan in 1959.

Returning to the US, they settled in Birmingham, Alabama where they started their family while he pursued his residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center. He become certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1965 and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery in 1966.

Dallas and his family moved to Corpus Christi TX in 1969 where he quickly became a respected member of the community. Dallas, along with his esteemed partners played a pivotal role in introducing advanced medical technologies, including the heart-lung machine to local hospitals, greatly enhancing patient outcomes in coronary bypass surgery. In 1989, he moved to McAllen, TX to work with the McAllen Medical Center and to help start the South Texas Heart Institute. He retired in 1996. Lovingly known as "Doc" he was a cherished member of the Corpus Christi, Cimarron and McAllen Country Clubs.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anita, and his sister June Dalton Sherman, Dallas is survived by his brother, James Garrison Dalton, his four children: Theresa Salinas (Alvaro) of Monterey Mexico, Dede McMahon of New York, Dallas Dalton, III of New York, Michael Dalton (Suzanne) of Carbondale, CO and his grandchildren: Rolando Salinas, Alan Salinas, Andres Salinas, Michael Dalton, Jr., Chase Dalton, Kibby McMahon, Ryan McMahon and Rachel McMahon.
