David was a friend to me and a teacher to my younger brothers. I still have a picture of David and my brother Jon on the dock, when they had just come in from a canoe trip. They are smiling the most joyful smiles. David often led the trips with the youngest children because he was so magical with them. I remember a story that he told me once: "They were all asking how to curse in Spanish," he said. "So I told that them that I would teach them the very worst word in Spanish... worse than the worst word they could think of in English." I can imagine all those little boys, crowding around David, just waiting for him to go on. "And so I taught them to say.... Te quiero mucho!!" And for the rest of the day all those little boys ran around fiercely yelling how much they loved each other. That was David. I can imagine him smiling a beautiful smile, watching that. Te quiero mucho, David.

I first met David when he was a participant in our wilderness canoeing program located on a remote island in Northern Ontario. The trips usually lasted a month and the days were long and hard as each person was required to carry canoes and heavy packs along rugged trails deep into the wilderness and as far North as the shores of the Hudson Bay. Success depended upon strength, determination, adaptability, courage and a strong work ethic. David became the embodiment of these values and eventually became a member of the staff.
Over my lifetime I have worked with many thousands of young men. It was rare to meet someone who displayed all of these characteristics, plus a great sense of humor and tremendous heart. Dave became exceptionally good at working with our youngest boys, ages 10 thru 12. He would take them out on the most difficult trips and they would return with stories of high adventure and joy in their hearts. David cared about young people so much that he would call each one individually during the off season to see how they were doing. The young boys loved him and they would all return to be with him the next summer.
I too loved David and I will cherish the many fine memories that we created together in this land of clear waters and Northern Lights. David Knudsen

David was my best friend. He was full of life and enthusiasm each day to accomplish his responsibilities, which were given to him or those he created. His mind was so sharp and his heart so full of love he would reach out to everyone he met to help in any way he could. David made me a better man by being my friend and by involving me in his self demanding ways. My growth in being a better man made me respect David more and more. We had no limits on time when we would meet and talk. I knew my responsibility was to keep my knowledge up to date on anything and everything, if I wanted stay in the conversation with David. David went beyond friendship, he said I was family and included in this exclusive part of his life. I will always remember you and love you. My deepest condolences to Tito, Fran, Jaime, Dan and their family. Len
