James Palmquist Obituary

Harlingen - It is with heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of James "Jim" Palmquist, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend, who left us on May 28th, 2024, at the age of seventy-seven. Known for his quick wit and contagious laughter, Jim had a knack for turning the simplest moments into cherished memories, leaving everyone around him in stitches with his legendary jokes, and funny anecdotes. Jim was the life of the party, the cornerstone of every gathering, and the friend you could always count on.

Jim graduated from PSJA High School in 1965 and went on to earn a degree from Texas A&M University-Commerce. Before attending college, Jim proudly served his country as an Army Staff Sergeant and Air Traffic Controller.

After his time in the service Jim continued to serve his community with the same passion and commitment. He was extremely active in the American Legion belonging to Post 101 Pharr and Post 498 in Port Isabel. Also serving as the Chairman of the Board of the United Way of South Texas, Chairman of the Board of the McAllen Chamber of Commerce, McAllen Greeters and other civic organizations, always striving to make a positive impact.

Jim's career with Rio Grande Valley Gas Co., now ONEOK, Inc., spanned over three decades, during which he made significant contributions in serving families and businesses in the Rio Grande Valley. Jim's generosity and compassion leaves behind a legacy of selflessness and love.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roger and Patsy Palmquist; his brother Timothy Palmquist and his son, Christopher Palmquist.

Jim leaves behind his wife, Shawn Hofland-Palmquist, daughter, Stacy Palmquist, son, Paul (Bria) Hofland, daughter, Courtney Hofland, brothers Michael (Shannon) and Patrick Palmquist, and his four beloved grandchildren.

A 21-gun salute memorial service will be held at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission, Texas on June 28, 2024, at 10 am. Jim, you will be dearly missed and forever remembered.

Shawn, I am so sorry to hear of the passing of my dear friend Jim. He was like the brother I never had. We did some crazy things while working at the gas company, many of which no one needs to know about. He talked me into going on a blind date with my wife of 43 years. He was my best man at our wedding and a dear friend for these many years. Shannon and I enjoyed meeting with him for a breakfast or lunch every time we visited the Island for our annual anniversary fishing trip. We loved listening to his latest story and watch him laugh at himself. He will always have a place in my heart as a dear friend and brother. God will enjoy having him in Heaven. I am sure he will keep them laughing with his jokes.

Jim and I started at RGV Gas about the same time. My first day on Job in Hgn office was Dec 3, 1979 . I didn't know at the time but was told later that was the first day the company became Valero. Jim was always friendly and so helpful to me . Lots of memories, working with the employees at that time, his office was one of them.

I worked with Jim for many years. He taught me so much during that time. He was always in a good mood and didn't judge when I had no idea what to do.
