KING LOO Obituary

KING LEE LOO SR.
On Monday, August 15, 2011 King Lee Loo Sr., 86, entered into eternal rest in Christ in McAllen, TX. He was born to Lock Loo Lee & Fung Gene Mun Loo in Birmingham, AL on October 4, 1924.
He was a devoted family man, known for his distinctive laughter and love of life. He was a proud World War II veteran and member of the American Legion, Houston Grocers Association and the Chinese American Citizens Alliance of Houston all from which grew many lifelong friendships. He loved the company of friends and a good joke as well as traveling, fishing, and playing the stock market. He will be greatly missed.
King and his sister Flora were raised in Birmingham. At age 18, King joined the U.S. Army Air Corps specializing in communications and meteorology. Part of his training was at Vanderbilt University in Memphis, TN, where he met the love of his life, Mee Lum Hum a student at nearby Peabody College. Being fluent in Cantonese, army airman King taught radio communications to Chinese soldiers, some of whom later became part of the Flying Tigers. He also taught other airmen weather forecasting. Some of those airmen were crucial to the invasion of Normandy. King & Mee Lum married on June 10, 1945 while he was still serving. King graduated from University of Minnesota as a metallurgical engineer.
King and family lived in Houston from 1950 to 2004 (54 years). He moved his parents, sister and eventually his in-laws to Houston to keep ties close. King, like many Chinese of that day operated a neighborhood grocery store to support the family. Around 1970 King returned to the engineering field. He worked as a metallurgist for Cameron Iron Works, Trunkline Gas & Panhandle Eastern/ Duke Energy. He helped to set metal manufacturing standards for gas pipeline transmissions. King was ever the engineer. His dream trip was a retirement cruise through the locks of the Panama Canal.
Left to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of 66 years, Mee Lum Loo. He was very proud of the accomplishments of his children, Teresa Lee (Chevy) of McAllen, Vanessa Chang (Dennis) of McAllen and King Lee Loo, Jr. of Houston. He loved the individuality of each of his grandchildren Jason Lee, Sheldon Lee, Brandon Lee, Courtney Chang, Eden Chang, and Sarah Chang. Preceded in death by sister Flora Loo Toy and daughters Gwendolyn and Gay Lynn.
Viewing and visitation with family will be held Friday, September 2 from 6-8:30 pm at Earthman - Hunters Creek, Houston, Tx. Funeral services and interment will be September 3, Saturday at 10 am at Forest Park Cemetery also in Houston. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Chinese Baptist Church, Houston, Tx.

Dear Vanessa and Teresa, Joel and I were saddened to hear of your father's passing. We remember him when we first met him as a handsome, energetic, and loving man who had a zest for life and a love for his family - not only his daughters and son but his sons-in-law, granddaughters, grandsons, and his wife. We were so glad to have met your parents. How comforting our faith is at this time for you and yours. Please convey our condolences to your mom, husbands, sons, and daughters. Y'all have been in our thoughts and prayers.
